At ICI Paints we have been tackling some of those Issues over the past few years. Our approach, whilst keeping in mind the distant unitary goal of a computer-controlled facility, has been to focus on hardware modules which could be developed and used incrementally on route to system Integration. Thus, our work follows the primary split of process parameters into heat-transfer and temperature control, and mass transfer and agitation.

The relatively low entry level instrumentation cost and the relatively simple experimental methods associated with GARField - both comparable to a standard bench-top relaxation analysis spectrometer as commonly used by the food industry, for example, for water/fat ratio determinations - offer potential advantages to the industrial based user. Indeed, the overwhelming majority of the applications development work described here has been carried out in collaboration with major multi-national industrial corporations such as ICI Paints, Unilever and Uniqema, with industry sponsored research laboratories and associations such as Traetek, and with a range of small-medium sized enterprises.

The "comb" dispersing agent was a graft copolymer of polymethylmethacrylate-methacrylic acid (methoxypolyethylene oxide methacrylate) supplied by ICI Paints Division (Slough) and used as received. The exact molecular weight of the polymer is not known, but it is ejqpected to be in the region of 20-30,000 (as indicated by ICI Paints Division). The of the polyethylene chains was 750.

The preparation of nonaqueous sterically stabilized polymer latices was pioneered by Osmond and coworkers at ICI Paints Division. Their work is summarized in a comprehensive monograph (Barrett, 1975) that provides actual recipes for the successful generation of nonaqueous dispersions.
