The three major commercial Hcensors of xylenes isomerization processes are Engelhard, UOP, and Mobil. Several other companies have developed and used their own catalysts. These companies include Mitsubishi Gas—Chemical, Toray, ICI, Amoco, and Shell. AH of these processes are discussed herein. 

Amorphous Silica—Alumina Based Processes. Amorphous siHca—alumina catalysts had been used for many years for xylene isomerization. Examples ate the Chevron (130), Mamzen (131), and ICI (132—135). The primary advantage of these processes was their simpHcity. No hydrogen was requited and the only side reaction of significance was disproportionation. Single-Cell Protein. Systems involving single-cell proteins are often very large throughput, continuous processing operations such as the Pmteen process developed by ICI. These are ideal for air-lift bioreactors of which the pressure cycle fermenter is a special case (50). 

Auckland Regional Authority converted two M.A.N. buses to use a cetane improver and methanol and South Africa investigated the use of methanol with a proprietary cetane improver. Eour Renault buses were converted in Tours, Erance to operate on ethanol and a cetane improver, Avocet, manufactured by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). The results of these demonstrations were also technically successfiil slightly better fuel economy was obtained on an energy basis and durabiUty issues were much less than the earlier tests using dedicated engines. 

A.luminum Jilkyl Chain Growth. Ethyl, Chevron, and Mitsubishi Chemical manufacture higher, linear alpha olefins from ethylene via chain growth on triethyl aluminum (15). The linear products are then used as oxo feedstock for both plasticizer and detergent range alcohols and because the feedstocks are linear, the linearity of the alcohol product, which has an entirely odd number of carbons, is a function of the oxo process employed. Alcohols are manufactured from this type of olefin by Sterling, Exxon, ICI, BASE, Oxochemie, and Mitsubishi Chemical.

ICIFM-21SP Monopolar Electrolyzers. Id s EM-21 SP monopolar electrolyzer incorporates stamped electrodes that are 2 mm thick and of a relatively small (0.2 m ) size (50). The electrolyte compartments are created by molded gaskets between two of the electrode plates the electrode spacing is finite and is estabHshed by gasket thickness. The electrode frames are supported from rails and are compressed between one fixed and one floating end plate by tie rods. Inlet and outlet streams are handled by internal manifolds. A crosscut view of the electrolyzer is shown in Eigure 21. As of 1989, ICI had Hcensed 20 plants having an annual capacity of 468,250 t of NaOH.
