Biomimetic interfaces including lipid bilayers, hybrid bilayers, tethered bilayers as well as other interdigitated layers are composed of naturally existing constituents based mainly on the hydrophobic interaction. [Pg.149]

Supported bilayers represent biomimetic layers which can be supported on a range of materials and adapted for the study of biointeractions (protein-protein, lipid-lipid) including molecular recognition, ion-channel transport and intramembrane interactions. This interface type can be separated into the so-called SLBs (supported lipid bilayers), HBMs (hybrid bilayer membranes) and t-BLMs (tethered bilayer membranes). [Pg.149]

Related to this study is work reported by Jiang et al. [67] who used gold-supported s-BLMs, made of a octadecanethiol/phosphatidylcholine hybrid bilayer. They found that s-BLMs containing Ceo can act as both a photosensitizer for electron transfer from a donor molecule and a mediator for electron transport across a lipid bilayer. The steady-state... [Pg.460]

Hybrid phospholipid bilayers consisting of an outer phospholipid monolayer on a thiol SAMs (formed by liposome or vesicle fusion or by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique) have been prepared by this approach. These bilayers exhibit extremely low capacitance values, so that they can be used in sensor devices to test ions and lipophilic molecules. Thiolipids can also be used as an alternative to directly form the hybrid bilayer on the metal surface (Figure 3). ... [Pg.2774]

However, hybrid bilayers are not suitable for protein incorporation because water is needed at the inner part of the bilayer to avoid protein denaturalization. In order to avoid this problem, Au surfaces were functionalized with a short hydroxylated dithiol (dithiothreitol, DTT) which adopts a lying down configuration with the OH groups exposed to the environment. Vesicle fusion on these DTT surfaces allows phospholipid bilayer formation with a water layer between the DTT SAM and the inner phospholipid monolayer. The phospholipid bilayer exhibits good fluidity as has been shown by in situ AFM (atomic force microscopy) imaging. These bilayers have been formed on both planar and nanostructured [SERS (surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy) active] gold surfaces. ... [Pg.2774]

Different types of mimetic systems of biological membranes including vesicles (spherical phospholipid bilayers), LB monolayers, hybrid bilayers (HBLs) and tethered lipid bilayers were used in SERS investigations. LB films are monomolecular films that can be fabricated from amphiphiles at the water-air interface and transferred to a SERS solid substrate (such as island film). For SERS studies, the target molecule was treated as a dopant in a monolayer matrix formed for example by arachidic acid or phospholipids. Aroca and co-workers applied the LB technique to detect SERRS signal firom a variety of chromophores such as several perylene derivatives and RH6G even in SM level in some cases (Aroca 2006). HBLs are monolayers of phospholipids incorporated into SAM of long-chain thiols such as... [Pg.118]
