In 1987, the US National Institutes of Health reviewed existing worldwide data on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance (51). They concluded that resistance to antibiotics was not solely a function of usage, but might result from the inevitable process of bacterial evolution. Other phenomena, including increased human resistance to antibiotics never used in animals and the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in developing countries where use of animal antibiotics is uncommon, led the experts to support that human antibiotic resistance should primarily be due to a variety of factors other than animal antibiotics.

As with any radical step, the main obstacle to its implementation is the normal human resistance to change. In order to overcome this it is vital that chemists who are developing new processes be as fully conversant with SDRs as with their beakers and flasks. There is therefore a latent market for miniature versions of this equipment throughout the world s industrial and teaching laboratories. Once the cultural block is overcome and company decisionmakers fully appreciate the breadth of impact in prospect, then the process industry will be fully prepared to meet the challenges of the new century. 

Rituximab is a chimeric antibody that contains the human IgGx constant region and murine variable region, and binds the membrane-associated human CD20 antigen. Evidence for multiple mechanisms of rituximab action has been reported [96, 97]. Rituximab can deplete CD20-positive B cells via ADCC, CDC, or apoptosis however, it is not clear which is the most important mechanism in humans. Resistance to rituximab s in-vivo effects has been reported, but the underlying resistance mechanisms are not well understood.
