Huang Lian Tang

Huang Lian, Huang Qin and Zhi Zi are selected from the formula Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity), which can directly drain fire and fire-toxin. Together they are considered to be the deputy part of the formula. 

Huang Lian Jie Du Tang (Coptis Decoction to Relieve Toxicity)... 

If there is severe vomiting and constipation, to Da Chai Hu Tang add Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis (Huang Lian) and Fructus Evodiae Rutecarpae (Wu Zhu Yu). 

For delirious speech and constipation, add Cheng Qi Tang (Order the Qi Decoction). But if there is delirious speech and the bowels are open and uninhibited, simply take Si Wei Huang Lian Chu Re Tang (Four Flavors Coptis Eliminate Heat Decoction), i.e., Huang Lian Jie Du Tang as above. 

For vomiting of sour fluid, add Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis Huang Lian). This results in Lian Li Tang (Coptis Rectifying Decoction). 

For even more severe heat, add Scutellaria plus Rhizoma Coptidis Chinensis (Huang Lian) and Cortex Phellodendri (Huang Bai). This results in San Huang Si Wu Tang (Three Yellow Four Materials Decoction).

The decoction of conventional Chinese medication containing Rhubarb stem, Huang Lian, (Coptidis stem) and skullcap is widely employed in the treatment of hepatic disorder [85]. However, decoction requires heating that lessens its effectiveness. Nanoscale San-Huang-Xie-Xin-Tang formulation contains Rhubarb stem, Huang Lian, (Coptidis stem) and skullcap with a weight ratio of 2 1 1, respectively. Nanoscale decoction of this herbal formulation was prepared in normal water, which potentiates the antihepato-toxic activity and bioavailability [86].
