Table 1 shows production results for the flock. Differences were found in age of maturity and numbers of eggs. The LBW birds reached sexual maturity 7 d later than the SBW. This is in disagreement with Renema et al. (2007), who found that hen body weight did not affect age of sexual maturity when they were photo-stimulated at 22 wks. At 65 wks, birds fed 1.63 and 1.38 MJ ME/day produced the highest and the lowest number of eggs per hen housed (182.8 and 170). Pearson and Herron (1981) also reported maximum egg production for breeders fed 1.73 kcal ME/day when compared to allowances of 1.52 and 1.88 kcal ME/day (floor pens). This slight difference with our results can be attributed to a higher activity in birds housed in floor pens. [Pg.635]

Measures to reduce radon concentrations have been studied in an old house in which the radon decay-product concentration initially exceeded 0.3 Working Level (WL). Some of the measures were only partially successful. Installation of a concrete floor, designed to prevent ingress of radon in soil gas, reduced the radon decay-product concentration below 0.1 WL, but radon continued to enter the house through pores in an internal wall of primitive construction that descended to the foundations. Radon flow was driven by the small pressure difference between indoor air and soil gas. An under-floor suction system effected a satisfactory remedy and maintained the concentration of radon decay products below 0.03 WL. [Pg.536]

Another situation with potential information comes from experimental archaeology and the construction and use of prehistoric houses by modem people. Lejre is an Experimental Archaeology Research Center in Denmark where a variety of different experiments are conducted to reproduce the technology, architecture, and activities of the past. Lejre is also home to a number of wattle and daub, thatched-roof houses that replicate Iron Age structures (Fig. 6.22). In the summer months, interested individuals and families occupy these houses for weeks at a time, attempting to reproduce the daily lives of the prehistoric inhabitants. The earthen floors of these stmctures absorb and retain the residues of their activities. [Pg.181]

Plots of these elements on the house floor (Fig. 6.24) show clear differences and patterns. The results of the elemental analysis demonstrate different areas in the two structures. The smithy has low Ca, Cu, Fe, and K, while values for Mg, Mn, and Pb are above average. The two rooms in the smithy also show differences. In the residential structure, the stable areas are generally average for most of the elements, although Fe, K, Mn, and Zn are slightly higher in some of the samples. Zones of movement in the structures, doorways and entrance area, have lower concentrations of residues in the sediment, due to the erosion of the surface from movement. [Pg.182]

To illustrate the problem for the product developer, one only has to enumerate the soils and surfaces. The soils can vary from simple dust and hair to dirt, hard water spots, and fingerprints to hardened grease, soap scum, and excrement. Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) has different applications, because of its physical form (beads) and properties (higher permeability to water and less effective adhesion to facing materials than polyurethane). The expansion gases, pentane and steam, escape fairly rapidly from the foam, so the thermal conductivity of the foam filled with air is about twice that of the best polyurethane foam—a 50 mm thick slab of foam has a U-value of 0.5-0.6 Wm K . EPS mouldings can be used as shutters (formwork) for pouring concrete in a composite wall. The two EPS layers are connected at intervals to fix the thickness of the concrete. Extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) is used in plank form for insulation imder the concrete floor of houses, and in roofing panels. [Pg.349]

I like the idea of creating visual beds, particularly in a complex story. An example would be the strip club which [Enron executive] Lou Pai used to inhabit. We shot it in a way that emphasized numbers, and we cut it to music by Philip Glass. We tried to shoot a sense of the place of the California trading floor too, and find music and a shooting style that would convey the frat house atmosphere, to portray it from their point of view.
