Household Adhesives

Household adhesives are used for gluing, assembling, or repairing a variety of materials in the household. They include a large number of different adhesive types, usually offered in smaller packages such as tubes, bottles, or tins. [Pg.89]

The following list provides a survey of adhesive types frequently used in households  [Pg.89]

The term do-it-yourself adhesives has also become generally accepted besides the term household adhesives. A clear differentiation between the two ranges of adhesives is not possible. The above-mentioned household adhesives also include DIY adhesives. In addition to the above applications, DIY adhesives are also used for light renovation work in and around the house and are therefore also offered in larger packages or for activities such as wallpaper hanging. They include  [Pg.89]

Glue Sticks (Paper Adhesives, Solid). Glue sticks are used for gluing paper, cardboard, photos, and labels. Most of these sticks are solvent-fi-ee and contain a soap gel as builder and natural and/or synthetic polymers as adhesive component. They are also marketed as refiUable sticks. [Pg.89]

Of late, higher performance glue sticks based, for example, on polyurethane, which can be used to glue other materials such as wood, plastics, and metals have become available. [Pg.89]

Cyanoacrylates are also used widely in a number of industrial and household adhesives, perhaps the best known of which is Super Glue . Manufacturers use cyanoacrylates in the assembly of many products, including trophies, golf... [Pg.261]

When water-soluble initiators and surface-active agents are used, relatively stable latices are formed from which the polymer cannot be separated by filtration. In the case of vinyl acetate, the distinctions are more blurred. Our description of Procedure 3-3 above represents a transitional situation between a solution and a suspension process since the product separated from the reaction medium. Between the true suspension and the true emulsion polymerization, we find, according to Bartl [4], the processes for formation of reasonably stable dispersion of fine particles of poly(vinyl acetate) using reagents which are normally associated with suspension polymerization. The product is described as creme-like. The well-known white, poly(vinyl acetate), household adhesives may very well be examples of these creamy dispersions. The true latices are characterized by low viscosities and particles of 0.005-1 /im diameter. The creme-like dispersions exhibit higher viscosities and particle diameters of 0.5-15 fim. [Pg.239]

Since formic acid is toxic, can this material be removed sufficiently well from the final product to permit use of poly(vinyl acetate) or poly(vinyl alcohol) in situations where toxicity factors come into play (e.g., adhesives for food packaging, household adhesives) ... [Pg.241]

In a comprehensive study Curry [730] examined small samples (< 10 p.g) of 94 household adhesives commercially available in the UK. Modern adhesives are quite intractable (insoluble, rubbery, etc.)... [Pg.240]

Specification sheets should he issued for users if required. Sampling tests of industrial adhesives are rare unlike household adhesives. Tests of each production lot are usual. [Pg.1023]

This natural adhesive is derived from fish skins, especially as a by-product of the cod industry. Fish glue is a weaker adhesive than animal glue, but it is interesting for certain applications, as a household adhesive that is able to adhere to glass, ceramics, metal, wood, cork, paper, and leather. One or both substrates have to be porous to allow the adhesive to dry or, alternatively, a remoistenable fish adhesive can be used. [Pg.1391]

Larval Condominiums (160). Larval condos (see Figure 30.2) are made from 1-liter Nalgene polycarbonate, wide-mouth jars with lids (VWR 36318-646). Drill a 6-cm diameter hole in the middle of each Nalgene lid. Glue an 8-cm diameter piece of nylon screen on the outside of the lid over each hole using 100% silicone household adhesive (Dow Corning brand) (Figure 30.2). The nylon screen has a mesh size of 297 im and is available in 30 x 30-cm sheets (Fisher 08-670-187). [Pg.542]

Once the process of grinding cereal grains to make flour had been discovered, it cannot have taken long to observe that damp flour formed a rather sticky paste that would become solid when dried. Older readers may remember their parents or grandparents preparing flour and water paste as a simple household adhesive. One widespread use for it was the hanging... [Pg.73]
