Chemists make compounds and strive to understand their reactions. My own interest lies in the chemistry of the compounds of the elements carbon and hydrogen, called hydrocarbons. These make up petroleum oil and natural gas and thus are in many ways essential for everyday life. They generate energy and heat our houses, fuel our cars and airplanes and are raw materials for most manmade materials ranging from plastics to pharmaceuticals. Many of the chemical reactions essential to hydrocarbons are catalyzed by acids and proceed through positive ion intermediates, called carbocations. [Pg.182]

In the United States about 3 percent of all electricity produced comes from renewable sources of this a little more than half comes from biomass. Most biomass energy generation comes from the lumber and paper industries from their conversion of mill residues to in-house energy. Municipal solid waste also is an important fuel for electricity production approximately 16 percent ot all municipal solid waste is disposed of by combustion. Converting industrial and municipal waste into bioenergy also decreases the necessity for landfdl space. [Pg.158]

Flash steam and heat recovery systems provide a useful and simple means of recovering both heat energy and steam condensate that would otherwise be lost by BD. The capital cost for an average sized industrial boiler house is relatively low, and capital payback periods are usually within 12 to 24 months. [Pg.94]

The first law of thermodynamics states that energy may be converted between forms, but cannot be created or destroyed. Joule was a superb experimentalist, and performed various types of work, each time generating energy in the form of heat. In one set of experiments, for example, he rotated small paddles immersed in a water trough and noted the rise in temperature. This experiment was apparently performed publicly in St Anne s Square, Manchester. Joule discerned a relationship between energy and work (symbol w). We have to perform thermodynamic work to increase the pressure within the tyre. Such work is performed every time a system alters its volume against an opposing pressure or force, or alters the pressure of a system housed within a constant volume. [Pg.86]

Religious strife in the seventeenth century had driven families of skilled Huguenot silk workers like the Sarasins to the haven of this quiet old river port and city-state. A century later their entrepreneurial energy and judicious intermarrying had transformed Bale into a thriving merchants and bankers oligarchy of some 15,000 inhabitants. The town s broad streets, town houses, and steepled churches reflected its reputation for prosperity, order, and restrained Protestant piety. [Pg.183]

Fuel Choices for Fuel Cell Powered Vehicles," J. Holmes, statement before Subcommittee on Energy and Environment of the Committee on Science, U.S. House of Representatives, on behalf of The American Petroleum Institute, Exxon Corporation, October 5, 1999. [Pg.279]

Lamp housing. The housing is designed to direct and deliver to the substrate or the part to be irradiated. The lamp housing reflects and focuses the ultraviolet energy generated by the lamp. [Pg.30]
