Prostaglandin Hormones

Luteolysis The structural and functional degradation of the corpus luteum that occurs at the end of the luteal phase in the absence of pregnancy caused by the hormones prostaglandin-2(X and oxytocin. Communication between the corpus luteum and uterine endometrium is necessary for luteolysis. [Pg.1570]

For an organism to eliminate a lipophilic, chemically inert xenobiotic, it is usually hrst necessary to oxidize it to a more polar form. In addition, many biosynthetic pathways that produce steroid hormones, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, etc. involve oxidative steps. Organisms have evolved many enzymes to carry out these oxidations. Oxidation can occur by addition of oxygen (without addition of hydrogen which would represent hydration), removal of hydrogen atoms (without removal of oxygen which would represent dehydration), or simply removal of electrons. [Pg.33]

The fats also have a plastic function as they are included in cell membranes and other cell structures. The central and peripheral nervous systems are rich in lipids. PNFA are included in cell membranes, with their most significant function being the synthesis of cell hormones — prostaglandins. The properties of cell membranes as well as their interaction with external factors depend on the relation of PNFA concentration in cell components. In humans, prostaglandins are created not only in tissues but also in thrombocytes (thromboxanes) and in leucocytes (leukotrienes). The biological action of thrombocytes is extremely variant and depends on PNFA type which are the basis for fatty acid creation. [Pg.408]

Parthenolide, a constituent of feverfew, inhibits the release of certain chemicals, including the hormone serotonin, which is produced during a migraine attack, and certain inflammatory mediators, including the hormone prostaglandin, which regulates inflammation.
