The structural and functional plasticity of its entities as well as of the networks that interconnect them bears a more or less close conceptual relation to a number of processes belonging to other areas of science. To consider just one such case, at the highest level of complexity, one may mention the assembly-forming connections scheme of brain function [91] and the adaptive coding processes in neuroscience [92]. [Pg.26]

Table III indicates some interesting statistics. After pipe and conduit wire and cable, packaging film and siding are the next in high-volume use. In addition, there are widely divergent uses ranging from baby pants to automobile upholstery to credit cards. PVC has remained a versatile, safe, functional plastic that is strong, lightweight, and moderate in energy requirements for its manufacture. Table III indicates some interesting statistics. After these introductory considerations, this review will focus mainly on the analysis of expression and function of the two most recently identified neu-rotrophins NT-3 and NT-4/5. Three main points will be considered (i) patterns of mRNA expression of these neurotrophins and their receptors during development and in adults, (ii) regulation of their expression and (iii) functional aspects in vitro and in vivo. General considerations about their effects on PNS and CNS neurons and their functional plasticity, as well as possible applications of NT-3 and NT-4/5 in therapeutics, are discussed. [Pg.221]
