Synthetic hCT Is not commercially available now. Most assays have been developed by using hormone supplied as gifts from the CIBA-Gelgy Co., Basel, Switzerland for 131i or labeling. Immunization and standards although several useful antisera have been produced by Immunization with crude extracts of medullary carcinoma tissue. 

Toremifene is another commercially available SERM for the treatment of breast cancer. It exhibits similar efficacy and tolerability to tamoxifen in the metastatic setting. Cross-resistance to toremifene has been demonstrated in patients with tamoxifen-refractory disease.51 Therefore, toremifene appears to be an alternative to tamoxifen in postmenopausal patients with positive or unknown hormone-receptor status with metastatic breast cancer. 

Levothyroxine (L-thyroxine, T4) is the drug of choice for thyroid hormone replacement and suppressive therapy because it is chemically stable, relatively inexpensive, free of antigenicity, and has uniform potency however, any of the commercially available thyroid preparations can be used. Once a particular product is selected, therapeutic interchange is discouraged. 

Cell Culture-Derived Media-Derived Protein Impurities. Immunoassays can detect low impurity levels (<1 ppm).4 The ELISA is probably one of the most sensitive analytical methods. If bovine serum is used as a media component, then testing should include ELISAs for bovine serum albumin (BSA), bovine transferrin, bovine fetuin, and bovine IgG. Often hormones and growth factors, such as insulin or insulinlike growth factor, are used as media components. ELISAs should be used to detect and quantitate these residuals in the various production steps as well as in the final product. There are commercially available antibodies to most commonly used media components. If proprietary media components are used, then the same investment in time and effort is required for the production of specific antibodies, as described above for host cell impurities.

While many commercially available preparations contain only melatonin, many others contain a combination of this hormone with other active ingredients. Some of these other ingredients may be vitamins such as pyri-doxine, while others are natural remedies such as kava root and valerian. It is even available combined with acetaminophen, a common over-the-counter pain reliever. Frequently, the long-term effects and safety of these other ingredients are not known. Even less is known about any possible interactions between these substances and melatonin, because melatonin has been available and used commercially for only a short period of time. Many experts have suggested that it would be preferable to test melatonin in controlled studies to determine if it is effective and safe before it was released on the market and used by millions of people. 

Thyrotropin is an anterior pituitary hormone that stimulates the thyroid to produce and synthesize thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroglobulin. Thyrotropin alpha is a commercially available analog of TSH that is used to help detection of metastatic differentiated thyroid carcinoma it is also known as recombinant human TSH (rhTSH). 

The expense of an analytical procedure depends upon much more than the cost of the final analysis. Much of the expense of an assay is related to sample preparation, and for many applications immunoassays have tremendously reduced the time needed for sample preparation. Another consideration is the amount of time needed for the development of an assay. The additional expertise which must be developed in an analytical laboratory before immunoassays can be used with confidence may seem formidable, and waiting for an animal to develop antibodies may lead to unacceptable delays in assay development. On the other hand, once a usable antibody titer is obtained, the development of a workable assay is usually straightforward. It is also likely, if immunoassays become accepted for some aspects of pesticide analysis, immunoassay kits or at least critical reagents will become commercially available. Such kits already exist for many pharmaceutical products and hormones, and numerous companies will supply antibodies to a user supplied hapten on a contract basis (83). 

Increasing use of Sephadex G-types, LH-20 and Bio-Gel P types for adsorption chromatography has been made. For example a number of methods have been reported for the determination of oestrogens, from pregnancy urine on G-15 [197] and from plasma on LH-20 [198]. Xanthurenic acid in urine has been determined using a procedure based on adsorption to Sephadex [199] and serum uric acid has been purified by adsorption to Bio-Gel P-2 [200]. The binding of thyroid hormones to Sephadex is well known [201] and forms the basis of a number of thyroid function tests [202, 203].
