A partial empty sella syndrome occurred in an elite 39-year-old body-builder with a 17-year history of drug abuse involving growth hormone, anabolic steroids, testosterone, and thyroid hormone (82). 

The male sex hormone. Anabolic steroids are basically synthetic versions of testosterone.

Steroid Hormones. Anabolic hormones like testosterone and its synthetic analogues such as trenbolone have been widely used in beef production for several years. The non-steroidal anabolic agent zeranol has also been widely used for this purpose (14). Growth promoting uses of all steroid hormones were recently banned by the European Community, but various zootechnical (eg synchronization of estrus) and therapeutic (eg prevention of abortion) uses of the endogenous hormones and their synthetic esters are permitted (15,16). 

Natural and synthetic hormones are used worldwide to improve meat production There are, however, possible hazards for the consumer. Therefore, in most European countries the use of hormonal anabolics is restricted or even prohibited by law. Among the banned synthetic anabolics diethylstilbestrol (DES) takes the most important place at the moment. Analytical control is carried out in various ways. Frisch-kom and Smyth have described an HPLC method with electrochemical detection for the determination of growth promoting hormones in meat.
