Anabolic hormones, role

I Pharmacology. Insulin is an anabolic and anticatabolic hormone. It plays major roles in protein, carbohydrate, and fat metabolism. For a complete review of insuhn action, the reader is referred to a diabetes physiology text. Endogenously produced insuhn is cleaved from the larger proinsulin peptide in the cell to the active peptide of insuhn and C-peptide, which can be used as a marker for endogenous insuhn production. All commercially available insuhn preparations contain only the active insulin peptide. 

Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) in doses of 0.2 international unit/lcg per day subcutaneously has been used experimentally in adults with ESKD to enhance anabolism weight gain equal to 1.2 kg and increased transferrin concentrations have been reported after 4 weeks.In the future there may be a role for rhGH in the treatment of ESKD patients who have inadequate oral... 

Protein Synthesis. Two observations illustrate the role of insulin in protein synthesis The restoration of normal levels of protein synthesis in diabetics following insulin administration, and insulin s permissive role in stimulating anabolic processes, triggered by sex hormones, gonadotropins and corticosteroids. 

Overall, these data are consistent with a physiological significant role for liver-derived IGF-I. The fiver is a major peripheral sensor of anabolic inputs represented by the prevailing combination of nutrients and hormones. Increased hepatic IGF-I synthesis that occurs with high anabolic inputs supplements locally produced IGF-I to bring about the full growth response.
