Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), one of the most ancient oilseed species in North America, belongs to the family Compositae (Asteraceae) and the genus Helianthus. Cultivation of sunflower dates from times earlier than 3000 b.c., as indicated by archeological evidence obtained in sites once inhabited by the Hopi Indians, in the north of Arizona. [Pg.1289]

A previous letter by Martin on pages 96-99 of the October 2000 issue of the Townsend Letter for Doctors Patients had connected iron in high-meat diets to cancer and heart disease. The article in The Lancet was cited, and reference was made to Denmark during 1914-1918, when it was necessary to cut down on meat consumption and the cancer rate dropped. The Hopi Indians of the American... [Pg.318]

However, in 1984 Brewer s report on the cancer benefits of cesium treatment was pubhshed in Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior, Vol. 1, Supplement 1, pp. 1-5. Many cases of remission were supplied for late-stage cancer patients on treatment with cesium. Cesium treatment is not further addressed by Martin, but in Brewer s report mention is made of the Hopi Indians of northeastern Arizona, who were found to be nearly free of cancer as late as 1974. [Pg.328]

At this point, some further reconnoitering is in order about statistics. The Japanese and U.S. death rates mentioned earlier translate to 1.81 and 1.07 per 1000, respectively, which is of the order of the cancer incidence reported for the Hopi Indians. This requires a further distinction to be made between death rate and cancer incidence. [Pg.333]

In North America, the Hopi Indians, in what is now the U.S. Southwest, used coal for cooking and have been known (since the eleventh century) to use coal for heating and to bake the pottery from clay. Coal was later rediscovered in the United States by explorers in 1673—the first record of coal in the United States shows up in a map of the Illinois River prepared by Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette in 1673-1674 (they labeled the coal deposits charbon de terre). In 1701, coal was... [Pg.12]

Niacin may be present in foods in a bound form (i.e., nia-cytin in corn) which is not absorbable. This is particularly true of corn, wheat, oats, rice, and rye. Yet, pellagra occurs less frequently than one might expect in Mexico, where corn consumption is high. Born of centuries of experience, it is the custom in Mexico to treat corn with limewater before making tortillas, thereby liberating the nicotinic acid. Likewise, the Hopi Indians of Arizona roast sweet-corn in hot ashes, another traditional practice that liberates the nicotinic acid. But the ways of food preparation in Africa do not have this effect. [Pg.768]
