Traditional practices

Nonchemical or traditional practices, such as weed seed removal, optimal crop seeding rates, crop selection, enhanced crop competitiveness, crop rotation, and mechanical weed control are all important components of an effective weed management program (458,459). In the context of modern intensive chemical herbicide appHcation, nonchemical practices may even represent an innovative approach to weed management and should receive careful consideration.

The lack of such scientific evidence does not automatically mean that such products are dangerous or ineffective. Many people are willing to trust traditional practices that have been used for hundreds of years whether there is scientific evidence for them or not. They are willing to accept the claims of healers from fields other than modern medicine about the benefits of such products. Indeed, an important reason for the adoption of the DSHEA in 1994 was to allow individuals the right to make choices about dietary supplements without the intervention of the federal government in that process.

With regard to composition, chemists of pre-1760 France had hardly made any progress or significant change from their ancestors of the earlier years of the century. Macquer had attempted to put some of the traditional practices into explicit verbal form, specifically the relationship of properties to composition, but the lack of a measurable concept of a component body continued to inhibit the appearance of a functional compositional system.

The CDP was developed by the Farrel Corporation in Ansonia, CT, and sold under the trade name Diskpack. Although over a dozen machines were manufactured, sold, and used in industry, the line was discontinued. As for grape dehydration, the management of alcoholic fermentation is still linked to traditional practices, which provide very poor control of the fermentation parameters, such as microbial population and temperature. 

In earlier discussions of small-molecule structures, as shaped by angular-momentum vectors [7], the traditional practice of labelling electrons in chemical bonds, was followed. Some work has been done in the North Coast with malo-lactic fermentation in Chardonnay, following the traditional practices in Burgundy. Factors used to encourage experimental malo-lactic fermentation in white wines have been bacterial inoculation, warmer (18°-21° C) fermentation temperatures, prolonged lees contact, and low free-S02 levels until fermentation is complete.

Since starting my private practice in 1968, I have treated all of my patients, children and adults, many severely disturbed, without resort to medication.
