Hope, sustaining

In loving memory of Ant, whose love of intelligent technology promised so much, and to Amanda, Neil and Sarah, in the hope that your children inherit a more sustainable world than my generation leaves behind. 

The writing of this book was undertaken because it was intended to be the first work that solely focuses on chemistry, and what appropriate metrics for Green Chemistry might be. We hope the book provides an up-to-date and authoritative text on the current development of environmental concepts in chemical technologies from clean and green to sustainable development. We also think it provides up-to-date information on the problems of metrics fundamental aspects of metrics, practical realisations and real-world case study examples. The concepts and approaches of metrics are related to the fundamental problems in chemistry and the main focus is on the use of metrics to promote the development and implementation of green chemistry and technology solutions. 

As to the future of organics, I remain optimistic. The barley plain is in retreat, and one hopes that some farmers will revert to a more sustainable mode of agriculture. It is here that Jon Newton s book will prove invaluable, setting technical standards and advising on finance, marketing and sales. 

Some researchers explored Ni-YSZ cermets that used both fine (average size of 0.6 pm) and coarse (average size of 27.0 pm) YSZ as the starting materials. It was hoped that the coarse YSZ particles would form a frame that keeps the total volume unchanged while the fine YSZ particles would sustain the network of Ni and pore, providing good electrical conductivity and microstructural stability [14]. However, it is not clear how such an anode compares with conventional anodes made from both fine NiO and YSZ in terms of strength, electrical conductivity, and electrochemical activity. 

My hope is that we can create a model of sustainable housing. I want to create an alternative to what already exists. That s what I have to do to survive. 

Educating others is a major coping skill for me. I m on the school board and have been working on policy development for about five years now. I ve done a lot in that direction. As I see society recognizing the need for a cleaner environment, my hope is sustained. But, it s very slow work and frustrating. Maybe the information I deliver will be discussed, or maybe it ll go to a committee. When I hit a dead end, the anger builds. I m learning how to communicate better and...

Similarly, Dow has entered into a joint venture agreement with Dom-tar of Canada to operate what the companies hope will be by 1990 a self-sustaining PET and HDPE recycling business. The North American company is expected to take postconsumer plastics and, using a proprietary Dow process, convert them into resins for use in Domtar s manufacturing or to be sold by Dow. 

The crisis efforts in the shortage years of the seventies did not lead to a technology that would have delivered us if the oil crisis had really existed. It is hoped that the topics covered in this text will stimulate a sustain effort in the areas covered so that progress can be realized for a critical situation that may develop in the future. 

Sustaining hope can seem impossible to those suffering from depression, given that hopelessness is among the defining characteristics of the condition. At its worst, depression is so encompassing that each moment feels end-... 

Will medications known to sustain maintenance over several years continue to do so indefinitely Few studies have monitored antidepressant maintenance efficacy for periods exceeding several years (Prien and Kocsis 1995). Lacking data, the clinician can only hope that efficacy over several years will translate into sustained effectiveness over many years, decades, or indefinitely. This remains to be demonstrated. For imipramine, maintenance of euthymia has been systematically demonstrated in a small number of patients for at least 5 years (Kupfer 1992). Anecdotes suggest that SSRIs may lose some of their efficacy over time, but few convincing data support this to date. Considering the widespread use of SSRIs, research is sorely needed to address this question. 

The authors have been sustained through the inevitable drudgery of writing by an enthusiasm for this fascinating subject. We hope that some of this transmits itself to the student. 

Since its conception, the Roundtable has grown rapidly, and it will hopefully be sustainable and conhnue to grow in scope and influence. Currently, there are plans to expand the number of intermediates supphers who are members, to expand into Asia, and to start a biopharmaceuhcal section to mirror what has been done for small molecules. It is clear that pharmaceuhcals can move forward faster together as an industry than as individual voices in the green arena. 

Now that we have two governing reaction-diffusion equations and two independent concentrations we can hope for a more varied range of local stabilities and perhaps also for sustained oscillatory solutions. The latter may then be manifest as solutions which are distributed in both space and time. 

Sustained nuclear fusion has yet to be achieved and remains a hope for abundant future energy. Yet the energy that has always sustained us has been the energy of nuclear fusion. Explain. 

The use of C02 in the synthesis of carboxylates (including acrylates), esters and lactones, carbonates, carbamates, and polymers may help to solve substantial problems encountered in the chemical industry, and hopefully advance towards sustainability. In all such cases, the new processes based on C02 would replace old energy- and material-intensive technologies that employed either the use of toxic compounds (e.g., phosgene) or were characterized by a high E-factor [6].
