Similarly, Dow has entered into a joint venture agreement with Dom-tar of Canada to operate what the companies hope will be by 1990 a self-sustaining PET and HDPE recycling business. The North American company is expected to take postconsumer plastics and, using a proprietary Dow process, convert them into resins for use in Domtar s manufacturing or to be sold by Dow. [Pg.49]

Ontario reported a recycling rate of 50 percent for HDPE bottles in 2003. In Australia, the overall HDPE recycling rate was reported to be 23.1 percent in 2003, compared to 17.9 percent in 2002 and 19.0 percent in 2001. ... [Pg.524]

Several types of contamination are of concern in HDPE recycling. The first is contaminants that add undesired color to natural HDPE. A prime culprit is caps on bottles. WhUe... [Pg.527]

The contribution of non-specified plastics and non-plastic contaminants to plastics recycling programs is dependent on the plastic types collected. Non-specifled plastics range from as little as 1% for relatively simple plastics collection (PET and clear HDPE beverage bottles) to as much as 10 to 20% for plastic bottle or colored HDPE recycling. Non-plastic contamination can be 1% to 10% by weight. Even a narrowly defined plastic scream of PS resulted in 8% non-PS plastics and non-plastic contaminants. [Pg.41]

TTie demand for recycled resins is expected to rise significantly in the next three years, according to the study, "The Market for Plastics Recycling and Degradable Plastics, by Find/S VP, a New York market research firm. HDPE and PET are estimated to comprise 65% of the recycled resin market for 1990. It is expected that the amount of recycled HDPE and LDPE will nearly double between 1990 and 1991, from 252 to 498 million pounds, and from 87 to 163 million pounds, respectively (Chamas, 1S190]. It is estimated the HDPE recycle will exceed 1 billion pounds by 1994. Figure 5.1 shows the recycled resin demand fat the six primary thermoplastics by type from 1988 to 1993. The combined total of recycled resin for the six plastics by the end of 1993 are projected to be 3.5 times the 1990 levels. [Pg.70]
