Holland, Peter continued his study of cooking, but this time in a run-of-the-mill eatery in Amsterdam. He longed to bring his familiarity with the Buddhist traditions to light, and when he moved to Philadelphia his dream came to fruition.

Holland and Peters earlier reported examples of three- and four-coordinate N2 complexes with iron in the formal +1 oxidation state, but in neither case were terminally bonded N2 species identified or isolated dinuclear end-on Fe-NN-Fe species were inevitably obtained (99,100). Therefore, Peters and coworkers recently began to turn their attention to new derivatives of the classic Sacconi-type tripodal ligands to achieve access to a terminally bound Fe-N2 complex. Indeed, by employing the mono-anionic ligand L8 — [f2-Ph2PC6H4)3Si] (Fig. 10) they were able to generate the desired complex [Fe(L8)(N2)] (10) (101).

Most companies have developed their own in-house multiple-factor methods for preliminary cost estimation.

The main objective here is to determine the production cost of a chemical. Estimating the product-sales price and the return on investment is beyond the scope of this discussion. There are several texts, such as Valle-Riestta [20], Peters and Timmerhaus [4], and Holland and Wilkinson [38], that discuss methods of evaluating profitability and other aspects of process economics. 

With these elements, the cash flow calculation can follow the procedure outlined below. The definition of the terms could be slightly different, and should always be checked for comparative studies. In this text we adopt the approach of Peters Timmerhaus (1991). A more elaborated treatment written by Holland Wilkinson can be found in Perry (1997). 

A thorough presentation of fundamentals of an economic analysis for process design can be found in the classical book of Peters and Timmerhaus (1991). In addition this book contains detailed information about the cost of chemical equipment. A concise but useful treatment can be found in Coulson Richardson volume 6 (1993). The part on economics in Douglas (1987) is particularly well written from the viewpoint of a designer. The chapter written by Holland Wilkinson for Perry s Handbook 7 edition (1997) contains an extended description of the modem concepts of profitability, a comprehensive estimation of manufacturing and fixed-capital costs, as well as an introduction in the accounting and cost control concepts. The economic evaluation of projects from the perspective of the Institution of Chemical Engineers-UK may be found in Allen (1991).
