Igniter fuses

Ignition means Method employed to ignite a deflagration train of explosions of pyrotechnic substances (e.g., a primer for propelling a charge, an igniter for a rocket motor, or an igniting fuse). 

A bomb can be considered to contain four functional blocks, namely, a control system, a detonator, a booster, and a main charge. Although a simple ignition fuse can be used as a control system and timing device, the control system is usually more mechanical or electrical in nature. The detection of control systems may be visual, or by magnetometry, or by X-ray. It must be remembered that many of the items involved in the ignition system, that is, clockwork, batteries, or electronic circuitry, are commonplace in ordinary items, such as cameras, mobile telephones, and personal stereos, and are not unique indicators of the presence of a bomb. In fact, it is the presence of explosives that is the key indicator of a bomb. 

Other devices for igniting fuse trains of pyrotechnic items are listed in Ref 44a, p 146, and described in Ref 50, pp 99-101 Ref 57, pp 191-92 207-08. Some of the devices, besides the previously mentioned "safety fuse" and "quickmatch", include delay elements.

United States Standard Tear-gas Grenade.—The standard lear-pat grenade (CN), M-7, consists of the container, igniting fuse, and filling (see Fig. 11). Store matches and completed fuse igniters in moistureproof containers such as plastic or rubber type bags until ready for use. Damp or wet paper book matches will not ignite. Fuse lengths should not exceed 12 in. (30 cm) for easy storage. These can be spliced to main fuses when needed. 

This item consists of a continuous train of explosive or fastbunung material enclosed in a flexible waterproof cord or cable. It is used for setting off an explosive or a combustible mixture of pen ders by action of the fuse flame on the material to be ignited. Fuse cord can be initiated by a match flame, using a specific procedure, or Uh a standard U.. Army fuse lighter. Fuse cord bums at a uniform rate allowing the user to be away from the immediate scene when the incendiary actually functions. 

Fuse lighters are handheld stiff wires covered with a slow-burning low explosive mixture lit by matches. They are used to ignite fuses. 

In a transportation context, igniter fuses are metal tubes containing black powder, although the term has also been applied to quick-matches and squibs.

As both weaponry and the nse of explosives for blasting developed, the need for safe, reliable ways to ignite these devices became obvious, and the concepts of an ignition fuse and a pyrotechnic delay emerged.
