At present there are no standards to describe the methods to be used for corroboration. Similarly the microarray community lacks consensus regarding the extent to which corroboration must be undertaken. Erom the perspective of publishing, many journals require extensive confirmation of microarray data whereas others limit corroboration to the small number of genes that are of interest or those whose expression levels are in question. Obviously, confirmation of many genes is time-consuming and defeats the purpose of a high-throughput system. 

Any high-throughput system for protein crystallography requires efficient processes for converting measured diffraction images into experimental electron density maps and structures. Chapters 6 to IT and T 3 cover the various approaches to data analysis in considerable depth. 

Several successful attempts were done to transfer classical CEIA to a microchip-based format. This kind of miniaturization is a trend that can overcome the limitations of CE in high-throughput systems. On-chip CE offers both parallel analysis of samples and short separation times. Koutny et al. showed the use of an immunoassay on-chip (32). In this competitive approach fluorescein-labeled cortisol was used to detect unlabeled cortisol spiked to serum (Fig. 8). The system showed good reproducibility and robustness even in this problematic kind of sample matrix. Using serum cortisol standards calibration and quantification is possible in a working range of clinical interest. This example demonstrated that microchip electrophoretic systems are analytical devices suitable for immunological assays that can compete with common techniques. 

Such brightness is available from thermal-field emitters, and workers are using them in prototype high throughput systems (39), but the ir reliability at the high total currents needed to produce a final beam current of several microamps is not proven for production environments. 

In summary, inkjet success is based on treating the "inkjet detail" with respect. Although it is elegant in concept, it is very difficult to implement in practice, especially in very demanding applications such as very high throughput systems, and printing of functional and unique materials. 

Trends in the crystallization process development in the pharmaceutical industry is to carry out measurements at a small scale in addition to utilizing automation and high throughput systems as exemplified by the use of automated metastable zone measurement for 1 mL samples. It is expected that the future batch crystallization recipes will be designed based on the data collected from much smaller scale crystallizers than what is currently used in industry.
