Rahn s work was based on the fact that different pollution sources emit characteristic chemical "signatures" — characteristic amounts and types of chemical elements — depending on the type of fuel burned. For example, coal-fired plants emit more manganese than vanadium oil-fired plants emit more vanadium than manganese. By measuring the levels of these chemical elements in air pollution, Rahn hoped to determine whether the pollution came from coal-fired sources (and thus predominantly from the Midwest), or from oil-fired sources (and thus chiefly from the Northeast). The reformed gas is quenched to remove water vapor, mixed with clean recycled top gas from the shaft furnace, reheated to 925°C in an indirect fired heater, and injected into the shaft furnace.
