2- hexadecyl phenyl

Decomposition of Hcxadecyl Phenyl Tellurium Dichloride in DMF7 A stirred suspension of0.2g (0.40 mmol) hexadecyl phenyl tellurium dichloride, 30 mg (0.51 mmol) of sodium chloride, and 2 ml of DMF is heated under nitrogen at 100° for 1 h. The mixture is Ihen allowed to cool to20 J, is poured into water, and extracted with hexane. The extract is dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate and filtered through a short column of silica gel. The solvent is evaporated to leave l-chlorohexadecune as a colorless oil yield 96 mg (92%). [Pg.580]

The product structures available in this process are primarily determined by components in the paraffinic distillates used. The heterogeneity of virgin distillates has been illustrated by API sponsored work on distillate components 21). The preferred predominance of relatively straight-chain alkyl groups may be effected by combinations of selection of paraffin distillate source, and use of acid or solvent refining to effect enrichment of paraffinic components. With the advent of the urea precipitation technique of isolating the n-paraffins 26), particularly those in the decyl to hexadecyl range, it is now possible to produce products which are limited principally to the isomeric secondary phenyl alkanes a dodecyl benzene mixture prepared by this process from a 95+% n-dodecane would consist essentially of the 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-phenyl-substituted dodec-anes. [Pg.330]

The increase in alkylation efficiency of HEC with quaternary ammonium hydroxide is not limited to DPGE. Experiments were conducted in which HEC was alkylated with 1-bromohexadecane (cetyl bromide), 3-n-pentadecenyl phenyl glycidyl ether (PDPGE)14, or 1,2-epoxyhexadecane (C]6 a-olefin epoxide) in the presence of either sodium hydroxide or benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide. As before, the molar A/HEC ratio was 0.50, and the water content of the diluent in the benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide experiment was decreased to compensate for the higher water content of the base so that the final water content of both reactions was the same (14.4%). The hexadecyl content of the polymers was measured by gas chromatography. The sodium hydroxide mediated reaction of 1-bromohexadecane yielded a hexadecyl alkylation efficiency of 0.5%, while the benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide reaction yielded a hexadecyl alkylation efficiency of 6.2%. A twelve-fold increase in the hexadecyl alkylation efficiency was observed in the reaction conducted with the quaternary ammonium hydroxide. [Pg.37]

The catalytic effects of poly(3-methyl-l-vinylimidazolium iodide) poly(3-n-hexadecyl-l-vinylimidazolium iodide), and their monomeric analogs on the alkaline hydrolysis of a series of neutral and anionic nitro-phenyl esters were studied in order to elucidate the contribution of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions to their esterolytic efficiency. [Pg.75]

The surfactant is the sodium salt of 8-phenyl n-hexadecyl p-sulfonate (molecular weight 404.6 dalton). One sample was generously provided by Prof. W. H. Wade of the University of Texas, Austin. Another batch (Research Sample 8727J) was kindly provided by Continental Oil Company, Ponca City, Oklahoma. [Pg.47]

At low enough concentrations that the surfactant is totally dissolved and unassociated, the apparent equivalent conductivities of sodium 8-phenyl-n-hexadecyl-p-sulfonate ought to be about the same as the equivalent conductivities of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), because they have the same cation and this ion contributes the most (around 51/71 =75%) to the conductivity. It followed that the much larger equivalent conductivities measured in samples six or more months old could be attributed neither to the surfactant alone nor to a surfactant impurity, because they did... [Pg.60]

Spectroturbidimetry, conductimetry, ultrafiltration, ultracentrifugation, vapor sorption, polarizing microscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were used to study phase behavior of pure sodium 8-phenyl-n-hexadecyl-p-sulfonate in water as a function of temperature and sodium chloride concentration, and in decane. The first four techniques gave information on solubility and states of dispersion ranging from visible, settling suspensions to transparent, stably dispersed submicro-scopic particles. Surfactant solubility in water was only 0.06 wt% at 25°C, increased 11-fold at 90°C, but decreased 300-fold with 3 wt% salt at 25°C. The surfactant-rich phase in... [Pg.78]

Large-pore mesoporous materials with enhanced textural characteristics (surface area, pore size distribution and pore volume) were obtained from a pH-adjusted synthesis with a surfactant mixture of hexadecyl- and dodecyltrimethylammonium salts in combination with mesitylene-swelling. This material was grafted with phenyl-alkoxysilanes and subsequently sulphonated. Nitrogen adsorption and multinuclear MAS NMR were performed to monitor the different synthesis steps. [Pg.318]
