Although lithotripsy is the most common application of ESWT, other uses exist, and PVDF has played a role in evaluating their performance. For example, a PVDF hydrophone was used to measure the acoustic field of a pneumatically driven device employed in orthopedics to treat heel pain [81]. [Pg.376]

Musculoskeletal A previously healthy 91-year-old man was given levofloxacin for presumed bacterial pneumonitis and developed bilateral heel pain within 4 days and bilateral complete Achilles tendon rupture after 4 weeks [66 ]. [Pg.517]

Calcaneal enthesophytes in a long-distance runner with chronic heel pain complaining of a recent acute exacerbation. a Sagittal 12-5 MHz US image demonstrates abnormal prominence (asterisk) of the posterior calcaneus at the distal insertion of the Achilles tendon (arrowheads) (see for comparison Fig. 16.31c). Small linear calcific deposits (arrow) are also visible within the tendon, b Lateral radiograph of the heel confirms new bone formation at the posterior calcaneus (arrow)... Fig. 16.75 a,b. Fig. 16.83 a,b. Retrocalca-neal bursitis in a patient with chronic heel pain. Longitudinal a gray-scale and b color Doppler US images reveal hypoechoic swelling of the retrocalca-neal bursa (arrowheads) deep to a thickened distal Achilles tendon. The peribursal area appears hyper-vascular at color Doppler imaging. C, calcaneus... [Pg.825]

In patients with heel pain, the bony prominences of the calcaneus are palpated in order to reveal tenderness or palpable defects. Patients with plantar fascia enthesopathy complain of localized pain over the inferomedial aspect of the calcaneus, at approxi-... [Pg.845]

Fig. 17.34a-c. Plantar fasciitis and calcaneal enthesophytes. a Long-axis 12-5 MHz US image over the posterior insertion of the plantar fascia with b lateral radiographic and c schematic drawing correlation in a patient with chronic heel pain shows signs of preinsertional fasciitis (open arrow) associated with a prominent enthesophyte (arrowheads) arising from the inferior aspect of the medial tubercle (asterisk). The hyperechoic cortical line (thin arrows) of the calcaneus is typically interrupted and discontinuous due to the anterior projection of the spur... [Pg.867]

Now Richard of Gloucester has used his cleverness to turn on his own kin. I know—I pray—that Louis is still free, but such hope as that gives me is a small, weak thing, and on its heels comes always fear for him. But chief of my terrors, waking and sleeping, are those for my boy Ned, who is my son in all but name. When I think of his head stooped under who knows what pain, my heart cramps my breath is stopped painfully by grief, as if I have been struck a blow in the throat. [Pg.115]

A 75 year old man was examined on a routine visit 1 month after being disabled by a stroke. He was very immobile and in bed. He complained of a painful heel, which on examination was inflamed and with a small necrotic centre. A pressure sore was diagnosed and suitable measures taken to manage this. A week later there were further lesions on the other foot but this time on the dorsum of the foot and lower leg. These were not easily explained by pressure necrosis, indeed a closer examination suggested a vasculitis. The cause for this was frusemide which had been prescribed for a mild heart failure apparent at the time of the stroke. It is very easy to accept the obvious without careful examination. [Pg.232]

Analgesic efficacy and clinical use Nalbuphine (Errick and Heel, 1983 Schmidt et al., 1985) is a medium potent opioid analgesic used for the treatment of moderate to severe pain and inter-operatively as adjunct to anesthesia. Because of its antagonistic action component, analgesia may be subject to a ceiling level. [Pg.211]

I fought him with a deadly desire to wound and be satisfied. I tore at his clothes and thumped him with my heels and fists, grabbed his short hair and twisted, tried to bite him, but he only laughed and clamped down harder, ground my head against the stone floor, and bit my breast until I howled with pain. Then he drove himself inside me and my legs opened wider, wider, my body arched, and I pounded my wrists in an ecstasy of sensation. But I was a divided Emilie—and one half looked on at this sensuous, thrashing creature and hated her. [Pg.105]

Diabetic neuropathy has become a serious health problem as it can be associated with severe complications such as the diabetic foot syndrome (Ramsey et al., 1999 Mueller et al., 2003). Patients with diabetic neuropathies often develop chronic foot ulcerations. The ulcers are sometimes located on the balls of the feet over the metatarsal heads but are more commonly encountered on the toes and sometimes over the heels or malleoli. They are primarily related to tissue damage, of which the patient is unaware because of loss of pain and temperature sensation. Qther contributory factors are autonomic skin changes with fissuring as well as... [Pg.244]
