Heat insulation application

Polystyrene can be made into a veiy-low-density foam which has found use in electrical, sound, and heat-insulation applications. The inflammability is a definite setback for such applications, and experiments are under way to use halogenated polystyrene for such purposes or to incoiporate ifiert and fire-resistant or fire-retarding ingredients. Polystyrene foam can also be produced from expandable beads which contain an expansion... [Pg.1010]

For insulation applications, plastics are mostly used. For water insulation (waterproofing), PU, PVC, thermoplastic elastomers, silicones, various rubbers, acrylics, and even PE are mainly used. For heat insulation applications, PVC, EPS, PU foams are used directly (for roofs and walls), as well as in sandwich panels. In addition, UPVC-hollow panels are being used as interior cladding to provide multi-purpose insulation (for water, heat, noise), specifically for pipes, wall insulation, and so on. [Pg.166]

Applications and end uses include the following semiconductor and flat panel display manufacture, electrical insulating parts, heat insulating applications, as well as seals, bearings, and wear plates in various industrial applications. [Pg.342]

The markets for polyetherimides arise to an extent from stricter regulations concerning flammability and smoke evolution coupled with such features as high strength, toughness and heat resistance. Application areas include car under-the-bonnet uses, microwave equipment, printed circuit boards and aerospace (including carbon-fibre-reinforced laminated materials). The polymer is also of interest in flim, fibre and wire insulation form. [Pg.526]

Krupp Kautex BFT, blowmoulding foam technology, has reached commercial fruition and its first industrial-scale application will be at a new company, BFT Plastics in Northern Ireland, where a machine to mould pallets and transport boxes will be installed later this year. The BFT process uses a chemical blowing agent to foam HOPE to increase rigidity and impact resistance and improve heat insulation. [Pg.83]

In some applications the propellant can be cast directly on the primed chamber wall in most cases, however, the propellant is bonded to the wall or to the heat insulation through an intermediate layer—the liner (36). [Pg.123]

Light weight reinforced syntactic plastics are a new application of microspheres, an example being made from an epoxy resin, glass fiber, and carbon or glass microspheres. These materials have also good heat insulation and ablation properties40). [Pg.92]

Other coatings, such as TiAIN (96), TiCN, Zr02, and ZrN (97), and CrN (98) were developed for special applications. The last was developed for higher speed machining of titanium alloys. Sometimes a coating is developed not for its wear-resistance but for its heat insulation. The case in point is alumina coating of cBN to reduce the heat conductivity at the surface so that the cBN performance can be enhanced (99). [Pg.211]

Ethylene copolymers were compared with liquid plasticisers for use as additives to improve the flexibility of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) for electrical cable insulation applications. The PVCs were assessed by determining smoke generation, flammability, tensile properties and the low temperature brittle point. The ethylene copolymers gave similar peak heat release rates, but the peak smoke and the total smoke generation were lower. They also gave similar or increased strength, similar elongation and flexural modulus, and lower brittle point temperatures. 4 refs. [Pg.97]

There are numerous industrial products of colloidal silicas in various forms. The methods of industrial synthesis and main applications are briefly surveyed as follows. Ultra-fine particles of nanometer order such as aerosil (commercial name) are produced by the hydrolysis of tetrachlorosilane in air. A similar material can be obtained from oxidation of tetralkoxysilane in a gas phase. The former is used as a thixotropic additive of composite materials, heat insulator and etc. [Pg.93]

The composition of the two kinds of coatings for indoor and outdoor application, heat insulating (MEXT, M ASB) and lire protective (S EXT S ASB), are shown in Table 8.1. [Pg.227]
