This was a great advance, as complex hydrocarbons of various kinds could be clearly named if their stmctures were known. The Geneva system, modified and expanded by subsequent Commissions, is used systematically in the fourth and fifth editions of Be /stem s Handbuch der Organischen Chemie (1), and as the basis of lUPAC nomenclature. In 1992 a commemorative symposium on the centennial anniversary of the Geneva Conference was held in Geneva (45).

The third edition of this work, in four volumes and as many supplementary volumes, gives a brief description of all pure organic compounds prepared up to July 1, 1899, with their physical constants, methods important reactions, and all references to the literature.

I1EII.STEIN, F. P. (1838-1906). A German chemist noted for his compilation Handbuch der Organischen Chemie, the first edition of which appeared in 1880. A multi volume compendium of the properties and reactions of organic compounds, it has been revised several times and remains a unique and fundamental contribution to chemical literature.
