Apart from a complete set of Beilstein s Handbuch and as many scientific journals with indexes as the Institution can aSFord, the following selected volumes are suggested as forming the nucleus of a small library for use in connexion with work in the organic chemistry laboratory. 

Beilstein s Handbuch der Organischen Chemie xSHxs Springer, Berlin, 1918, Section 13, pp. 354—549 and Section 13(2) pp. 164—308. 

By reaction of thiosemicarbazide or its 4-alkyl derivatives with nitrous acid Freund and co-workers in 1896 prepared compounds which were formulated as amino or alkylamino derivatives of the ring system 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole (1). Oliveri-Mandala, however, argued that these compounds are actually thioazides (2), and this view seems to have been generally accepted (e.g. in Beilstein s Handbuch) until... 

The references which we obtain in a successful search are of various kinds. The main work of Richter , as already mentioned, first refers us to Beilstein s Handbuch der organischen Chemie, which may now be briefly described. The third edition of this work, in four volumes and as many supplementary volumes, gives a brief description of all pure organic compounds prepared up to July 1, 1899, with their physical constants, methods important reactions, and all references to the literature. 

This publication is so important to organic chemistry that it deserves a section by itself. Beilstein s Handbuch der organischen Chemie, usually referred to as Beilstein, lists all the known organic compounds reported in the literature during its period of coverage. For...
