Hand dishwashing detergents applications

The main application of hand dishwashing detergents is to wash dishes by hand. Liquid products can also be used for washing cars, fine laundry, kitchen countertops, and hands. Consumer habits and typical washing procedures vary widely with hand dishwashing. Some of the variables are amount of product used, water temperature, water hardness, use of implements, type of soil, dish surface properties, and time.

Unlike sodium LAS, alcohol ether sulfates are more tolerant to hardness ions and as a result do not require an accompanying high level of builder in the formulation. Figure 8.11 shows the relative insensitivity of AEOS to hardness ions. Small amounts of AEOS when added to LAS were found to improve the interfacial properties. They are more compatible with enzymes, which can also reduce the cost of enzyme stabilizers in the formulation. They are also milder to the skin and, as a result, are frequently used in hand dishwashing applications. The superior detergency performance of this surfactant is demonstrated by its superior efficacy in most stain categories.

Hand dishwashing liqnids are expected to clean all types of soils from dishware, have copious long-lasting foam, be mild to hands, and have a pleasant fragrance. These primary functional attributes are a result of the surfactant mixture used in the product. The major surfactants utilized in hand dishwashing liquids are described here. 

In many applications, one found it necessary to employ surfactants that were nonionic. For example, nonionic detergents as used in washing clothes are much different in structure and properties than those used in dish-washing machines. In washing machines, foam is crucial as it helps in keeping the dirt away from clothes once it has been removed. On the other hand, in machine dishwashing, one does not need any foam. This arises from the fact that foam will hinder mechanical effect of dish-washing process.
