Hallucinogens classification

Glassification of Substance-Related Disorders. The DSM-IV classification system (1) divides substance-related disorders into two categories (/) substance use disorders, ie, abuse and dependence and (2) substance-induced disorders, intoxication, withdrawal, delirium, persisting dementia, persisting amnestic disorder, psychotic disorder, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, sexual dysfunction, and sleep disorder. The different classes of substances addressed herein are alcohol, amphetamines, caffeine, caimabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, nicotine, opioids, phencyclidine, sedatives, hypnotics or anxiolytics, polysubstance, and others. On the basis of their significant socioeconomic impact, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, and opioids have been selected for discussion herein.

Cannabis in large amounts has some hallucinogen-like activity. Nevertheless, the other features of this intoxication are sufficiently different to merit a separate classification for this drug.

The composition of the six controlled substance analogs listed above often stimulate the same areas of the brain, but are chemically quite distinct from one another. MDMA (3, 4-methylenedioxymethampheta-mine) is a complex drug that makes simple classification difficult. Its chemical structure is related both to the stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline. Methamphetamine bears a close resemblance to two powerful chemicals in the body, dopamine and norepinephrine, which regulate mood, memory, and movement.

Mescaline is chemically classified as a phenethy-lamine. Some of its identified chemical compounds are 3,4,5-trimethoxy-beta-phenethylamine, 3,4,5-trimeth-oxybenzeneethanamine, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphene-thyla-mine, and mescaline. This chemical classification makes the drug different from the other hallucinogens, specifically the more popular LSD, which is classified as an indole. Its chemical formula is CnH17N03.

The Goodman and Gilman classification obviously uses LSD as the base measure of hallucinogens. 

Oassification Mild hallucinogen is possibly best classification. Also referred tb in some respects as relaxant, appetite enhancer, etc. Actually, this drug may defy rigid classi- f ication completely.
