A large array of parameters is available for macaques for the evaluation of effects on male and female fertility (Tables 18.2 and 18.3). Most of these parameters correspond to clinical endpoints used by gynecologists and andrologists for diagnosis of infertility. This book does not focus on these other treatment modalities. It simply focuses on a non-MD therapist and a physician working together to care for their common patient. However, the non-MD therapist could be a psychologist, a social worker, a marriage and family therapist, a psychiatric nurse, or a counselor. When we refer to physicians, we could mean a family physician, a psychiatrist, an internist, a pediatrician, or an obstetrician-gynecologist. To simplify matters, we refer to the therapist and the physician throughout this book. This book is primarily intended for therapists who want to build collaborative relationships and learn the biological information they need to communicate with physicians. 

All patients with suspected or confirmed chlamydial conjunctivitis should be tested for other sexually transmitted diseases and evaluation and consideration given to comanagement with a gynecologist or urologist. If left untreated, chlamydial vaginitis can result in severe pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. Sexual partners of infected individuals should also receive systemic antibiotics, even if no symptoms are present. In preadolescent children, sexual abuse must be considered in cases of confirmed chlamydial infection. 

There was another influence, a family friend who was a gynecologist. He asked me what I would like to do and I learned from him about the medical profession. By the time I was 15, I decided that I would become a doctor. I had also read Paul de Kruif s Microbe Hunters which was a very popular book, the first of its kind. I wanted to discover things in medicine. From the very beginning I had a goal to cure people by scientific discoveries.
