Guild

Trademarks were known in ancient civilizations. Wine jars found in Pompeii bore the mark Vesuvinum, identifying their contents as a wine produced in the region of Vesuvius. The artisan s guilds of Europe adopted marks to identify merchandise originating with their members such marks were protected against falsification by penal laws.

Arthur Lapworth (1872-1941) was born in Galashiels, Scotland, and received a D.Sc. at the City and Guilds Institute, London. He was professor of chemistry at the University of Manchester from 1909 until his retirement in 1937.

Professional associations, especially the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, have traditionally played an active role in decisions related to pharmaceutical regulation. The Australian Pharmaceutical Advisory Council was established by the Australian Government to advise the Commonwealth Minister for Health on pharmaceutical policy.

The German guild of chimney cleaners states that in 1998 chimneys of more than 12 million gas boilers have been checked concerning the CO concentration in the flue. In 616,000 boiler systems the CO concentration was between 500 to 1000 ppm (maintenance recommended). In 375,000 cases the CO content amounted to more than 1000 ppm (complaint). It is estimated that in the USA 1,600 deaths occur yearly due to CO-intoxication [18].

After Frankland s move to the Royal College of Chemistry, which had become part of the Royal School of Mines, the school moved to South Kensington (1872), where it became known in 1885 as the Normal School of Science, then, in 1890, the Royal College of Science. The City and Guilds Central Institution, later the Central Technical College, opened across the street from the Royal School of Mines in 1884. Frankland s former pupil, Henry Armstrong, became the Technical College s professor of chemistry.
