Understanding the factors governing specificity and selectivity of KS domains can aid both biosynthetic assignment of PKS clusters and guide potential PKS engineering approaches. A second important need for some guidance system lies in stray electric fields. Clearly, a sufficiently large potential arranged transversely to an ion beam can serve to deflect ions away from the intended direction. Such stray fields can be produced easily by sharp edges or points on the inside of a mass spectrometer and even more so in an ion guide itself. Considerable care is needed in the construction and design of mass spectrometers to reduce these effects to a minimum. [Pg.372]

The potential of the reaction is given as = (cathodic — anodic reaction) = 0.337 — (—0.440) = +0.777 V. The positive value of the standard cell potential indicates that the reaction is spontaneous as written (see Electrochemical processing). In other words, at thermodynamic equihbrium the concentration of copper ion in the solution is very small. The standard cell potentials are, of course, only guides to be used in practice, as rarely are conditions sufftciendy controlled to be called standard. Other factors may alter the driving force of the reaction, eg, cementation using aluminum metal is usually quite anomalous.
