Automatic guards

A semi-automatic heat meter apparatus was described by Howard et al35 and a guarded heat flow meter by Foreman36. Calibration of heat flow meter apparatus has been discussed by Lackey et al37 and Scott and Bell38.

Normally a guard is installed on a moving part of the machine, which acts as a barrier to prevent the entry of any part of the human body in the hazardous area. It is also possible that a safety device is installed that prevents or interrupts the operation if part of the operator s body is in a hazardous area or requires its withdrawal prior to machine operation. The guard or safety device itself must not constitute a hazard, must be safe, low maintenance, easy-to-use, automatically controlled, or fixed on the machines. There are different types of guards and safety devices available according to the design and demands of machines. 

The HPLC system comprised a Beckman 116 programmable solvent pump with a Beckman 168 photodiode detector—this was checked and data were processed with the Gold Nouveau software system (Beckman Coulter, Palo Alto, CA) and a Beckman 507 automatic injector with a 100.0-pL loop and a heating chamber for the columns. Analyses were carried out with an Ultrasphere ODS column (5.00-pm particle size, 15.0 cm x 4.60 mm internal diameter) purchased from Beckman Coulter. A guard column (2.00 cm x 2.00 mm internal diameter), packed with Sperisorb RP-18 (30.0 0.0 pm pellicular), was supplied by Upchurch Scientific (Oak Harbor, WA). 

As the sanatorium was operated by the Royal Navy the guards were armed. It didn t make any difference, they weren t front-line combat troops. For the purpose of ensuring that health and safety conditions are maintained, every power press is thoroughly examined at least every 12 months where it has fixed guards, and at least every 6 months in other cases (e.g. interlocked guarding or automatic guarding). 

Under conditions of normal use, products shall remain physically stable to the degree that they cannot present a hazard to operators or service personnel. The various tilt and tip tests are not applicable for equipment that is intended to be secured to the building before operation, as specified in the installation instructions. When stabilizing means are provided to improve stability, when doors or drawers are opened, they must be automatic. If not automatic, suitable and conspicuous markings shall be provided to caution service personnel. The physical requirements depend on the applicable product standard.
