Then in 1949, she, too, left Bedford for an appointment at QMC. Her initial rank was as Assistant Lecturer in the Chemistry Department, then later she was promoted to Lecturer when she received a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1950. Grove also served as Warden of the Women s Hall of Residence from 1954. She died on 2 August 1980. [Pg.119]

In the late 19th century, the chemistry departments of the constituent Colleges of the University of London had been involved in the discourse on the teaching of chemistry as a pure or applied subject, or somewhere in between.02 The antecedents of Imperial College (IC) certainly saw themselves as belonging to the applied camp. [Pg.119]

Some of the courses, including chemistry, were merged with other science subjects to form the Normal School of Science (named after the Ecole Normale in Paris). The Normal School of Science was renamed the Royal College of Science (RCS) in 1890. At first, the RCS saw itself primarily as a teacher training college in practical science and, as such, attracted women students including some from overseas. [Pg.119]
