Roosevelt did not respond immediately to the letter, and it took two months before decisions were made. In particular, the letter prompted Roosevelt to establish what came to be known as the Uranium Committee, thereby setting in motion events that would culminate in the establishment of the Manhattan Project and the successful development of nuclear weapons. Little was done with this new material until the military, working on the atomic bomb, needed a special material for gaskets that would resist the corrosive gas uranium hexafluoride, which was one of the materials used to make the atomic bomb. General Leslie Groves, responsible for the U.S. Army s part in the atomic bomb project, had learned of DuPont s new inert polymer and had DuPont manufacture it for them.

The Manhattan Project officially began on September 23, 1942, when Colonel Leslie Groves was named director of the project. Groves acquired production sites at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and Hanford, Washington, and he brought in Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist from the University of California at Berkeley, as the scientific director at Los Alamos, New Mexico.
