Groundnut oil

The first engines invented by Rudolf Diesel ran on groundnut oil, but because of the advent of relatively cheap oil this type of biodiesel never became commercially viable. Since about 1930 the diesel engine has been refined and fine tuned to run on the diesel fraction of crude oil, which consists mainly of saturated hydrocarbons. For this reason the modem diesel engine cannot run satisfactorily on a pure vegetable oil feedstock because of problems of high viscosity, deposit formation in the injection system and poor cold-start properties. Today, however, environmental... [Pg.173]

The involvement of testosterone in the testicular atrophy caused by di(2-ethyl-hexyl) phthalate was examined by co-administration of testosterone (1 mg/kg bw) subcutaneously with 2000 mg/kg bw di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [purity not specified] in groundnut oil to adult male Wistar rats for 15 days (Parmar et al., 1987). Administration of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate reduced the sperm count and also significantly increased the activity of y-GT, lactate dehydrogenase and P-glucuronidase and decreased the activity of sorbitol dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase. Co-adminis-tration of testosterone seemed to normalize the sperm count and the activity of testicular enz5mies. The role of testosterone in the testicular toxicity of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate has not been fully elucidated. Several reports refer to increased or decreased testosterone levels in plasma and testicular tissue. [Pg.101]

Artemether is a methyl ether derivative of dihydroartemisinin. It is dispensed in ampoules for intramuscular injection suspended in groundnut oil and in capsules for oral use. Like artesunate and artemisinin it has been used for both severe and uncomphcated malaria. Artesunate is probably faster-acting than the other two. [Pg.342]

Lecithins are essential components of cell membranes and, in principle, may be obtained from a wide variety of living matter. In practice, however, lecithins are usually obtained from vegetable products such as soybean, peanut, cottonseed, sunflower, rapeseed, corn, or groundnut oils. Soybean lecithin is the most commercially important vegetable lecithin. Lecithin... [Pg.410]

Typical among oils which have lost market share over the past twenty years are cottonseed oil, which has fallen from 5.4 to 3.8%, groundnut oil (from 5.7 to 4.3%), and olive oil (from 3.2 to 2.3%), despite the increases in production shown in Table 1.3. [Pg.5]
