The first engines invented by Rudolf Diesel ran on groundnut oil, but because of the advent of relatively cheap oil this type of biodiesel never became commercially viable. Since about 1930 the diesel engine has been refined and fine tuned to run on the diesel fraction of crude oil, which consists mainly of saturated hydrocarbons. For this reason the modem diesel engine cannot run satisfactorily on a pure vegetable oil feedstock because of problems of high viscosity, deposit formation in the injection system and poor cold-start properties. Today, however, environmental... [Pg.173]

The Diesel cycle was proposed by Rudolf Diesel in the 1890s. The Diesel cycle as shown in Fig. 3.8 is somewhat similar to the Otto cycle, except that ignition of the fuel-air mixture is caused by spontaneous combustion owing to the high temperature that results from compressing the mixture to a very high pressure. The basic components of the Diesel cycle are the same as those of the Otto cycle, except that the spark plug is replaced by a... [Pg.123]

Plant oils were already used as a fuel by Rudolf Diesel in 1912, but more recent testing revealed that pure oils, even of fully refined quality, do not fit the modern fastrunning diesel engines with their high efficiency and with low emission profile. Methyl esters are the derivatives of choice, simple to produce and come very dose to diesel in their fuel properties (Table 10.1). [Pg.323]

Some fuel-oils are used for driving internal combustion engines, such as Diesel Motors, invented by Ger engineer Rudolf Diesel (1858— 1913). Diesel oil is a heavy fhel in which combstn starts by spontaneous ignition due to compression, instead of spark-plugs used in gasoline motors... [Pg.593]

Diesel Substitute. Vegetable oils were used as motor fuel by Rudolf Diesel in 1900 when demonstrating his compression engines (116). Since then many publications referring to similar usage of cracked products of oils and fats have been published. [Pg.1037]

The use of vegetable oil for fuel is not a new idea. Rudolf Diesel reportedly used peanut oil to run one of his engines at the Paris Exposition in 1900. In addition, ethyl alcohol has been used widely as a fuel in South America and as a fuel additive in the United States. [Pg.345]

Rudolf Diesel chose peanut oil for his fuel when he first invented the diesel engine in 1892. While diesel engines now power many of our vehicles (farm equipment, trucks, barges), the diesel fuel currently in use is a mixture of thousands of hydrocarbons obtained from crude oil. Diesel fuel is known for its crude and dirty smoke-containing noxious gases and particles of sulfur, organic compounds, and soot. [Pg.470]
