Cmmbles are formed by grinding pellets to the desired sizes. Specialty feeds such as flakes can be made by mnning newly manufactured pellets through a press or through use of a double dmm dryer. The latter type of flakes begin as a slurry of feed ingredients and water. When the slurry is pressed between the hot rollers of the double dmm dryer, wafer thin sheets of dry feed are produced that are then broken into small pieces. The different colors observed in some tropical fish foods represent a mixture of flakes, each of which contains one or more different additives that impart color. [Pg.21]

Excess NaOH is used to start the reaction and not over 35% of the chromium is added as dichromate. At the end of the reaction, the thiosulfate is removed by filtration and recovered. The hydrous oxide slurry is then acidified to pH 3—4 and washed free of sodium salts. On calcination at 1200—1300°C, a fluffy pigment oxide is obtained, which may be densifted and strengthened by grinding. The shade can be varied by changes in the chromate dichromate ratio, and by additives. [Pg.145]

Grinding. Further size reduction is achieved by several stages of grinding with water to produce an ore slurry. Rod mills are frequently used for the first stage, in which the ore may be reduced to <3 mm. To reduce the size of the rodmill product so that about 75% is less than 0.25 mm in size, two stages of ball mills in series maybe used. [Pg.197]

Flotation. The slurry of ground ore leaving the grinding circuit may be separated from part of the water in thickeners or may go directly to the flotation cells. The latter are rectangular tanks into which air is injected or drawn via impellers. Flotation is based on producing a water-repellent chemical film on the exposed sulfide minerals in the ground ore. The sulfide minerals collect on the surface of the air bubbles and rise to the top of the flotation cell, where they can be removed from the froth. The froth overflows the cells in collector troughs called launders. [Pg.197]

Additives can alter the rate of wet ball milling by changing the slurry viscosity or by altering the location of particles with respect to the balls. These effects are discussed under Tumbhng Mills. A wet-process plant maldug cement from shale and hmestoue has been described by Bergstrom [Roc/c Prod., 64—71 (June 1967)]. There are separate facilities for grinding each type of stone. The ball mill operates in closed circuit with a battery of Dutch State Mines screens. Material passing the screens is 85 percent minus 200 mesh. The entire process is extensively instrumented and controlled by computer. Automatic devices sample crushed rock, slurries, and finished product for chemical analysis by X-rav fluorescence.
