Graphical Illustrations

The effects of electric fields on monolayer domains graphically illustrates the repulsion between neighboring domains [236,237]. A model by Stone and McConnell for the hydrodynamic coupling between the monolayer and the subphase produces predictions of the rate of shape transitions [115,238]. 

The Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential contains just two adjustable parameters the collision diameter a (the separation for which the energy is zero) and the well depth s. Comparison of the relative velocity change in the airflow created by a hood with a finite face area and by a point source is graphically illustrated in Fig. 7.85. At a distance greater than X/R = 1, the velocities induced by a realistic hood and by a point source are practically equal. This means that in some cases airflow in front of realistic hoods can be described using the simplified point source equations.

The data presented in Figure 8 graphically illustrate the tremendous and rapid growth in interest in FOSS chemistry, especially for patented applications. This looks set to continue with current applications in areas as diverse as dendrimers, composite materials, polymers, optical materials, liquid crystal materials, atom scavengers, and cosmetics, and, no doubt, many new areas to come. These many applications derive from the symmetrical nature of the FOSS cores which comprise relatively rigid, near-tetrahedral vertices connected by more flexible siloxane bonds. The compounds are usually thermally and chemically stable and can be modified by conventional synthetic methods and are amenable to the usual characterization techniques. The recent commercial availability of a wide range of simple monomers on a multigram scale will help to advance research in the area more rapidly.

Speleothem frequency distributions have provided a useful tool for broad comparisons, but they suffer from the problem of biased sampling strategies and low resolution at times of known abrupt change. The increased precision afforded by mass-spectrometric techniques will result in fewer studies using this approach to assess of growth frequency and, more often, records of continuous deposition and growth rate studies will be graphically illustrated.
