Lennard-Jones equation

The Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential contains just two adjustable parameters the collision diameter a (the separation for which the energy is zero) and the well depth s. These parameters are graphically illustrated in Figure 4.34. The Lennard-Jones equation may also be expressed in terms of the separation at which the energy passes through a minimum, (also written f ). At this separation, the first derivative of the energy with respect to the internuclear distance is zero (i.e. dvjdr = 0), from which it can easily be shown that v = 2 / cr. We can thus also write the Lennard-Jones 12-6 potential function as follows ... [Pg.225]

The Monte Carlo approach was invented hy Metropolis (Metropolis, 1953). The system concerned is considered in terms of a small number of particles—a few hundred. The basic decision that has to be made is What law are the particles i and going to follow in expressing the interaction energy between them as a function of their distance apart For example, a useful law might be the well-known Lennard-Jones equation ... [Pg.319]

This is in contrast to the soft-sphere approximation where some distance-dependent function such as the second term in the Lennard-Jones equation (3.166) is used. [Pg.326]

Bjemim s work it was simply Coulombic attraction, but in Wertheim the governing equation involves not only the attraction but also the repulsive forces, somewhat as in the Lennard-Jones equation. The actual equation used originated in work by Rossky and Friedman (1980). [Pg.331]

Professor of Chemistiy at Cambridge. At the atomic bond level, there is no difference between physics and chemistry. Lennaid-Jones, with his colleagues Taylor and Dent, realized that all known intermolecular forces are electromagnetic in nature. They range from the Coulombic forces between ions, to dipole forces between polar molecules, to the weak van der Waals forces which act between all atoms and which are responsible for adhesion. These adhesive forces, sometimes called London, London-van der Waals or dispersion forces, are always attractive because they result from instantaneous dipoles in one atom and their induced dipoles in a neighboring atom. The Lennard-Jones equation can be written... [Pg.85]
