Grain production

The per capita consumption of rice in the United States has doubled since 1960 to approximately 10 kg in 1989. Over the last decade U.S. rice consumption has benefited from a growing trend in U.S. diets away from high fat animal products and toward grain-based foods. Many health groups encourage use of the complex carbohydrates found in grain products such as rice. Also, increases in the Asian and Hispanic segments of the U.S. 

Over the past 30 years, the world food production has grown faster than the population, the major basis of consumption. The world food production increased at an annual rate of 2.4% (grain production increased at 2.7%), while the world population increase is now less than 2% (9). Research and improved technologies have contributed to an increase in food availability, which will continue if an appropriate political, social, and economic environment exists. The world population, now at 5.5 billion, is predicted to be 10 billion in the last quarter of the next century (9) and will place greater demands on the production and processing of food.

The commonly used catalyst today is a vanadia on a titania support, which is resistant to the high SO2 content. Usually the titania is in the anatase form since it is easier to produce with large surface areas than the rutile form. Several poisons for the catalyst exist, e.g. arsenic and potassium. The latter is a major problem with biomass fuel. In particular, straw, a byproduct from grain production, seems to be an attractive biomass but contains potassium, which is very mobile at reaction tern-...

A proteinaceous particulate material has been described that is effective as an oil spill-dispersant composition [1450]. The material is a grain product (such as oats) from which lipids are removed through organic solvent extraction. When such compositions are applied to an oil spill, they will adsorb oil, emulsify it, and finally, disperse it. Moreover, the compositions are substantially nontoxic.

Diet plays a significant role because iron is poorly absorbed from vegetables, grain products, dairy products, and eggs iron is best absorbed from meat, fish, and poultry. Administration of iron therapy with a meal decreases absorption by more than 50% but may be needed to improve tolerability.

The RDA for thiamine is 1.2 mg/day for adult males and 1.1 mg/day for adult females. Children need less and pregnant or lactating women need more. Whole-grain products, including breads and cereals, are good sources of thiamine, particularly if fortihed or enriched. There are no known toxic effects from thiamine ingestion and there is no specihed UL. 

Before taking final leave of the vitamins, let s note that, for vitamin after vitamin, good sources have been green vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products, milk, and meat. Mother was right eat a balanced diet and include plenty of veggies and fruits.
