While some contemporary alchemists such as Hunter, Emmens, Jollivet-Castelot, and Ayton had indeed tried to make gold, Ramsay s attempted transmutations led to a rush toward a different kind of treasure scientific immortality. Multiple chemists pursued the same kinds of experiments that Ramsay had, believing that they too had found positive results. They attempted to position themselves within the scientific world as the first to have proven artificial transmutation. Between 1907, when Ramsay announced his supposed copper transmutations in Nature, and 1914, when he abandoned his efforts, several significant chemists (including J. N. Collie, Hubert Patterson, E. C. C. Baly, Thomas Merton, Irvine Masson, and A. C. G. Egerton) all participated in experiments to use either radium emanation or cathode rays and X-rays to cause chemical transmutation. [Pg.121]

Henry hoped that alchemical gold might help him to pay state debts. In 1445 Sir Edmund Trafford and Thomas Asheton were duly granted the right to make gold, and coins were actually minted from the product they produced. But their alchemical gold later proved to be an alloy of mercury, copper, and gold. [Pg.16]

The first experiments in this area were carried out by Thomas et al. in 1974 [52], inspired by their earlier work on similar reactions from alkynes and cydopro-panes [53]. However, in the case of alkenes a stoichiometric amount of gold was indeed needed for the process gold was an oxidant and not a catalyst. [Pg.439]

Alkynes are by far the most popular and studied functional group in gold catalyzed reactions since Thomas et al. chose them for their research in 1976 [53, 84]. [Pg.446]

Hydrochlorination of Alkynes When Thomas and coworkers treated different alkynes in aqueous methanol with HAuC14 and observed the corresponding ketones as major products (Equation 8.28), with less than 5% of methyl vinyl ethers and vinyl chlorides, they were unaware of the fascinating treasure that was in front of them. Some of the most important types of products for gold catalysis were reported in the aforementioned study, but unfortunately at that time this process was believed to be a gold(III) oxidation process, despite the fact that the reaction achieved almost six turnovers. [Pg.446]

In a more recent, alternate theory, Thomas Gold (Cornell University) suggests tii.il. in contrast with the organic sediments theory, tire prime source of natural gas is primordial, abiotic methane rising from deep within the earth s mantle. This is discussed in further detail in tile article on Natural Gas. [Pg.1243]
