Gold, alchemical

Since the alchemists considered natural antimony minerals to be the most suitable raw material for the transmutation of metals into gold, alchemical literature abounds in references to antimony (65). The most famous of the early monographs on this element is the Triumphal Chariot of Antimony, which first appeared in 1604, in German. Johann Tholde, operator of a saltworks in Frankenhausen, Thuringia, the editor of this work, claimed that it had been written by a fifteenth-century Benedictine monk, Basilius Valentinus (3, 6). Since no conclusive evidence of the existence of this monk has been unearthed, and since the literary style... [Pg.98]

This is an interesting piece by Robert Boyle in the form of allegorical discourse about the possibility of alchemical transmutation. It was first published under the title Of a Degradation of Gold made by an anti-elixir a strange chymical narrative. London, 1678. This book is now extremely rare. The text below was transcribed for me by Justin von Bujdoss from the second edition, issued in London in 1739"... [Pg.47]

In the earlier sections, we have developed the theoretical framework for the FEP approach. In this section, we outline some specific methodologies built upon this framework to calculate the free energy differences associated with the transformation of a chemical species into a different one. This computational process is often called alchemical transformation because, in a sense, this is a realization of the inaccessible dream of the proverbial alchemist - to transmute matter. Yet, unlike lead, which was supposed to turn into gold in the alchemist s furnace, the potential energy function is sufficiently malleable in the hands of the computational chemist that it can be gently altered to transform one chemical system into another, slightly modified one. [Pg.50]

And in 189 6 (and possibly even the year before, when Crowley had attended his lectures), Ramsay had asked his class to think of themselves as medieval students of alchemy. He asked them to imagine him as the alchemist Basil Valentine as he read to them one of Valentine s discourses on alchemy in class. Ramsay and Collie both would be at the center of what, in chapter 3,1 shall call the transmutational gold rush —when academic chemists, beginning around 1904 and following Ramsay s lead, attempted to use radiation to transmute the elements and specifically saw this practice in alchemical terms. [Pg.45]
