The precipitation of gold occurred on the surface of the reductant charcoal. The charcoal was subsequently burnt and the gold recovered. This process was used successfully for some time until it was withdrawn in favor of using cyanide solution because of the ineffectiveness of chlorine water to dissolve silver, which more often than not co-occurs with gold ores. 

A list of the mines where different processing of gold ores is carried out is shown in Table 5.12. Although the pressure oxidation process appears to be the current leading technology, selection of the optimum route depends on several factors.

Arsenic occurs primarily in sulphide minerals associated with copper ores, and to a lesser extent with zinc, lead and gold ores. Arsenic is produced as a by-product of the smelting of these metals. Primary arsenic production has now ceased in the USA and Europe, and most arsenic is now imported from China and Mexico. The volatility of arsenic represents a significant concern, and there is at present no known natural mechanism by which arsenic is immobilized in the environment. Anthropogenic activities account for an input of some 19000 tonnes into the atmosphere, compared with 12000 tonnes from natural processes, such as volcanism and forest fires (Ayres and Ayres, 1996). 

The method of conducting a systematic assay of gold ores and alloys will be fully explained afterwards. It is a somewhat tedious and difficult process, requiring considerable experience and a regular assortment of apparates. Bnt even in the absence of those, a tolerably correct estimate of the ambnnt of gold present, may be readily arrived at by the following simple method.
