The detection of DNA hybridization using electrochemical readout is particularly attractive for the development of clinical diagnostics. The use of nanostructured materials in electrical detection for biomolecular sensing offers unique opportunities for electrochemical transduction of DNA sensing events. Tian and co-workers [175] have reported that PANI/Gold nanoparticle multilayer films electrocatalyze the oxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and detect DNA hybridization by both an electrochemical method and by surface plasmon enhanced fluorescence... [Pg.716]

Auer et al. [134] presented an example for multilayer formation and controlled deposition of functionalized nanoparticles on SAM of mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHA) using electrostatic interactions. As a pH-sensitive switchable linker between the SAM of MHA and negatively charged gold nanoparticles, bis-benzami-dine bolaamphiphiles having different alkyl spacers were used [135]. This strategy resulted in a potentially tunable and switchable property of the entire assembly. For example, the kinetics of adsorption as well as the final particle layer thickness can be controlled by the kind of bis-benzamidine used as the linker (Fig. 9.16). [Pg.393]

Similar polymer/Au nanoparticle multilayer thin films were made by Wu et al. in a study of pH-sensitive dissociation behavior of poly (3-thiophene acetic acid) (PTA A) and PAA in a LbL film (of 8 bilayers).50 Unlike the pure polymer LbL film, the Au nanoparticles-containing LbL films were difficult to be released from the substrate by varying the pH. It was suggested that the gold particles act as a cross-linker in between the multilayers, thus further enhancing the stability of the LbL films. [Pg.415]

The stepwise construction of self-assembled organic/inorganic multilayers based on multivalent supramolecular interactions between guest-functionalized dendrimers and nanoparticles and host-modified gold nanoparticles has been developed, yielding supramolecular LbL assembly (Fig. 13.8).12 Multilayer thin films composed of... [Pg.416]
