Chemical properties of deposited monolayers have been studied in various ways. The degree of ionization of a substituted coumarin film deposited on quartz was determined as a function of the pH of a solution in contact with the film, from which comparison with Gouy-Chapman theory (see Section V-2) could be made [151]. Several studies have been made of the UV-induced polymerization of monolayers (as well as of multilayers) of diacetylene amphiphiles (see Refs. 168, 169). Excitation energy transfer has been observed in a mixed monolayer of donor and acceptor molecules in stearic acid [170]. Electrical properties have been of interest, particularly the possibility that a suitably asymmetric film might be a unidirectional conductor, that is, a rectifier (see Refs. 171, 172). Optical properties of interest include the ability to make planar optical waveguides of thick LB films [173, 174]. 

The adsorbed layer at G—L or S—L surfaces ia practical surfactant systems may have a complex composition. The adsorbed molecules or ions may be close-packed forming almost a condensed film with solvent molecules virtually excluded from the surface, or widely spaced and behave somewhat like a two-dimensional gas. The adsorbed film may be multilayer rather than monolayer. Counterions are sometimes present with the surfactant ia the adsorbed layer. Mixed moaolayers are known that iavolve molecular complexes, eg, oae-to-oae complexes of fatty alcohol sulfates with fatty alcohols (10), as well as complexes betweea fatty acids and fatty acid soaps (11). Competitive or preferential adsorption between multiple solutes at G—L and L—L iaterfaces is an important effect ia foaming, foam stabiLizatioa, and defoaming (see Defoamers).

The largest uses of platinum group metals in electronics are ruthenium for resistors and palladium for multilayer capacitors, both applied by thick film techniques . Most anodes for brine electrolysis are coated with mixed ruthenium and titanium oxide by thermal decomposition . Chemical vapour deposition of ruthenium was patented for use on cutting tools . 

More recently, a new method of assembling multilayers of PB on surfaces has been described.110 In contrast to the familiar process of self-assembly, which is spontaneous and leads to single monolayers, directed assembly is driven by the experimenter and leads to extended multilayers. In a proof-of-concept experiment, the generation of multilayers of Prussian blue (and the mixed Fein/Run analog ruthenium purple) on gold surfaces by exposing them alternately to positively charged ferric cations and [Fe(CN)6]4- or [Ru(CN)f,]4 anions has been demonstrated.110...
