Auer et al. [134] presented an example for multilayer formation and controlled deposition of functionalized nanoparticles on SAM of mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MHA) using electrostatic interactions. As a pH-sensitive switchable linker between the SAM of MHA and negatively charged gold nanoparticles, bis-benzami-dine bolaamphiphiles having different alkyl spacers were used [135]. This strategy resulted in a potentially tunable and switchable property of the entire assembly. For example, the kinetics of adsorption as well as the final particle layer thickness can be controlled by the kind of bis-benzamidine used as the linker (Fig. 9.16). [Pg.393]

To a solution of ethyl 2-pyridyl disulfide (55 mg, 0.32 mmol) and DMAP (33 mg, 0.27 mmol) in dichloromethane (2ml) was added 2-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (77 mg, 0.27 mmol). The progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC (silica, CHCl,/MeOH 9 1). Upon completion (1 h) the product mixture was passed through a column (0.5 X 5 cm) of AG MP-50 (0.5 g, 3.5 meq (ml dry resin)1, Bio-Rad Laboratories). Elution with 3 ml of dichloromethane, followed by concentration of the filtrate under reduced pressure, afforded 2-(ethyldithio)hexadecanoic acid (91 mg, 98%) as a colourless oil. [Pg.12]

Other important experimental techniques utilized in the molecular transport studies include the mercury-drop junctions52,53 which have been used to study the transport through alkanethiols, and nanorods (a metallic nanowire-S AM-metallic nanowire junction)54 which have been used to measure 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid. [Pg.52]

Recently Mahapatro, et al., demonstrated the surface modification of functional self assembled monolayers on 316L stainless steel via lipase (Novozyme-435) catalysis (Scheme 4) 86). SAMs of 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid (-COOH SAM) and 11-mercapto-l-undecanol (-OHSAM) were formed on 316L SS, and lipase catalysis was used to attach therapeutic drugs, perphenazine and ibuprofen, respectively, on these SAMs. The reaction was carried out in toluene at 60 °C for 5 h using Novozyme-435 as the biocatalyst. The FTIR, XPS and contact angle measurements collectively confirmed the biocatalytic surface modification of SAMs. [Pg.187]

Lipophilic substances such as fatty acids have also been found to accumulate in the myocardium and this has prompted a search for Tc agents which might replace Tl in heart imaging applications. However, the binding of Tc to 2-mercaptohexadecanoic acid and related sub-... [Pg.7135]

X-ray photospectroscopy (XPS) allows an in-depth analysis of the coordination of metal ions to the films of 2 and 4. All XPS spectra were calibrated with reference to the Au 4f peak at 84.00 eV. Studies by Winograd and coworkers describing the interaction of Al with mercaptohexadecanoic acid (MPA) films showed that Cli and Ol core-level peaks shifted in the presences of Al [74]. Figure 6.11 shows for example the Cls core peaks for 2 in the absence and presence of Ca and Tb. The Cls core level of 2 was deconvoluted into 3 peaks 284.68, 285.95, and 288.03eV corresponding to CH-, C-O/C-N, and C=0 moieties respectively [75,76]. [Pg.162]

In our laboratory, 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid [HS(CH2)i6COOh MHA] was assembled onto nanosize superparamagnetic particles (40 nm y-Fc203) from either ethanol or chloroform solutions [9].
