BN species parallel those of CC. This parallelism does not hold so nicely for reactivity. The polarity and relative weakness of B—N bonds make BN species much more reactive than comparable CC species, at least with respect to polar additions or substitutions, and the reaction paths as well as the products may differ greatly. Chloropentaamminecobalt(III) chloride forms red-violet rhomb-shaped crystals which decompose on heating above 150° with the stepwise loss of ammonia. The solubility of the salt in water at 25° is 0.4 g./lOO ml. The compound readily aquates in hot water, forming the aquopentaammine chloride. Chloropentaamminecobalt(III) chloride reacts with hot aqueous ethylenediamine or dZ-propylenediamine to form tris (ethylenediamine) cobalt (III) chloride or the corresponding propylenediamine compound, with liberation of ammonia. Concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature produces a complex hydrogen sulfate of the chloro-pentaamminecobalt(III) ion. Aqueous mercury(II) chloride forms a characteristic precipitate of a double salt, [Co(NH3)6Cl]Cl2-3HgCl2, suitable for microchemical identification. The whole held of boron chemistry is covered, in a most comprehensive manner, in the 28 volumes on boron of Gmelin s Handbook. Two summarize early results and coordination compounds are dealt with, in part or completely, in recent volumes. Useful chapters, relevant to the coordination chemistry of boron can be found in refs. 2-4. For general information, standard works are available while several others contain relevant chapters that will be referred to where appropriate. Gmelin is the oldest handbook of chemistry. As early as 1817 Leopold Gmelin published the Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie (Handbook of Theoretical Chemistry), which later on lead to the Handbuch der Anorganischen und Organometallischen Chemie (Handbook of Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry). Nowadays, this handbook has more than 640 volumes. In December 1991 a part of Gmelin s Handbook was made available online in a database. It started with nearly 280,000 compounds. In 1997, when the database is expected to be complete, it will contain about 700,000 compounds. The database information is composed of the volumes published between 1924 and 1975, and, additionally, from ca. 110 technical journals, which were evaluated in order to cover the period from 1988 onward.
