Pollution, global problem

The oxides of sulfur create global pollution problems because they have longer lifetimes in the atmosphere than the oxides of nitrogen. Some of the SO2 and SO3 in the air originates from biological processes and from volcanoes, but much comes from the oxidation of sulfur in petroleum and in coal burned for fuel. If the sulfur is not removed from the fuel or the exhaust gas, SO2 enters the atmosphere as a stable but reactive pollutant. Further oxidation by radicals leads to sulfur trioxide ... [Pg.849]

The second outlines a remarkable success story on two counts. It was the first worldwide political agreement on solving a global pollution problem and this stimulated the research and development to find alternative chemical compounds to those which were destroying the ozone layer in the stratosphere. As we will see later this has been achieved on a remarkably... [Pg.54]

One air pollution problem of a global nature is the release of chlorofluoro-carbons used as propellants in spray cans and in air conditioners and their effect on the ozone layer high in the atmosphere. (See Chapter 11.)... [Pg.38]

Nuclear energy avoids the pollution problems of fossil fuels and won t add to global warming problems. Nuclear wastes build up overtime and have to be stored for millions of years. [Pg.39]

Global pollutants influence the entire atmosphere of the earth, e. g. halocarbons and carbon dioxide. The latter is important because of the potential it has to influence global climate. Risks associated with regional and global air pollution and forest health are high. The evidence available to describe the total boundaries of the problem for all pollutants is incomplete. [Pg.258]

In recent years, improper disposal of various waste materials has posed serious threats to surface and groundwater supplies and developed into a global scale soil and water pollution problem [1], Heavy metals account for much of the contamination found at hazardous waste sites in the United States, and have been detected in the soil and groundwater at approximately 65% of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund sites [2], Dramatic increases in land application of agricultural and municipal biosolids have accentuated the problem. In spite of their beneficial contributions as nutrient sources and soil conditioners, these amendments, if not monitored, pose a considerable environmental risk because of their high heavy-metal concentrations [3],... [Pg.37]
