Global conflicts, impact

Consider the following scenario poor company results, gloomy domestic and international economic prospects, and concern about the impact of global conflicts have combined to severely depress stock markets worldwide over the last few months.

Of course, within this aggregated picture, there remains considerable variation. Most notably, heroin production continued to expand in the conflict-ridden provinces of southern Afghanistan. While global heroin consumption does not appear to be growing, the impact of this surge in supply needs to be monitored carefully. 

The four-day Global Summit to End Sexual Violence in Conflict, which aimed to create irreversible momentum against sexual violence in conflict and practical action that impacts those on the ground, took place in June. At the time of writing the impact of SPI on patient outcomes is not clear. There has been some evaluation of the clinical indices on the first four sites, but conflicting views on the effectiveness of the programme. Some have claimed that the adverse event rate, as measured by the global trigger tool, has reduced... 

With the reduced armed conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a reduction in budget for traditional military active governments, global defence spending has declined. The impact of this downward trend is partly attenuated by an increase in defence spending in other countries such as the Middle East, India, China, Russia, South Korea and Brazil. Nevertheless a downward trend can be observed of global revenues for defense companies, which declined 1.3 % in 2012 and 1.9 % in 2011 (Fig. 20.2) [4]. 

The devastating impact chemical weapons have had in the past and the potential for e use of modern—even more deadly—chemical agents not only by States at war, but also by non-State actors in other violent conflicts, provide the imperative for an international effort to uphold the ban on such weapons and to work toward the complete global elimination of chemical weapons.
