Glass-lined tubes

Metal tubes internally coated with glass are commercially available with diameters up to 4 Him (Scientific Glass Engineering). These tubes show the mechanical strength of metal coluitins and the inertness and smooth surface of the glass columns. However, these glass-lined tubes have seldom been applied in LC. [Pg.78]

The choice of the length of the column will always be a compromise between the different demands put on the desired result and the performance of the liquid chromatograph. The length of the separation column is determined primarily by the number of theoretical plates required. Further, the column length is related to the packing technique applied, the pressure capabilities of the different LC components and sometimes the space available in the thermostat. [Pg.78]

With respect to the column packing, shorter columns (e.g., 10-25 cm) of metal [Pg.78]

For dry tapping the length is less critical and might be up to 100 cm. If a fixed number of theoretical plates is needed at a limited pressure drop, then n/V versus AP/ff (pressure drop per plate) plots of different particle sizes are helpful for finding the optimal column length and particle size. [Pg.78]

With glass columns, however, no high-speed separations can be expected on long columns because of their limited pressure resistance. [Pg.78]

Shipment and Storage. Sulfur dichloride, if kept dry, is noncorrosive at ambient temperatures, thus carbon steel and Hon can be used Hi the constmction of tanks, piping, and dmms. However, when water or humidity is present, materials resistant to hydrochloric acid must be used, eg, glass-lined pipe. Teflon, titanium, HasteUoy C, or possibly a chemically resistant, glass-reiaforced polyester. Threaded pipe joHits should be assembled with Teflon tape. Hoses should be constmcted with a Teflon inner lining with the outer tube constmcted of Neoprene or braided 316 stainless steel protected by an adequate thickness of Teflon. Sulfur dichloride should be stored away from heat and away from dHect rays of the sum. Toluene and sulfur dichloride react exothermically when catalyzed by Hon or ferric chloride. Safety precautions should be foUowed when such a mixture is present (165). [Pg.139]

Tables 10-16, 10-17, 10-18, and 10-18A give general estimating overall coefficients, and Table 10-19 gives the range of a few common film coefficients. Table 10-20 illustrates the effect of tube-wall resistance for some special construction materials. Table 10-20A lists estimating coefficients for glass-lined vessels. Also see Reference 215. The buffer (1 ml) containing a luciferase sample was placed in a glass test tube that had been pre-equilibrated at a temperature in a water-bath. After 2 min, the test tube was briefly cooled in cold water, and then luciferase activity in 10 jl1 of the solution was measured in 3 ml of the pH 7.8 buffer containing 0.3 i,M coelenterazine at 24° C. Irradiation Procedure. Reaction mixtures were prepared at room temperature by transferring desired quantities of reactants from their storage bulbs to the reaction vessel, a 500-cc. spherical borosilicate glass flask attached to the vacuum line by a section of glass capillary tubing and a 4-mm. bore threaded glass valve with a Teflon plug (Fischer and Porter 795-609). Prior to each experiment this vessel was baked under vacuum at 500°C. for 12 or more hours. [Pg.285]

Tekmar are another supplier of purge and trap analysis equipment. Their LSC 2000 purge and trap concentrator features glass-lined stainless steel tubing, a menu-driven programming with four-method storage and a cyrofocusing accessory. [Pg.80]

The freeze valve Another simple valve which is extremely effective and especially useful when one needs to seal off a unit containing a volatile liquid from the vacuum line, is the freeze-valve. This is a glass U-tube of not more than 5 mm i.d. in the duct connecting the two parts which need to be separated. If some of the liquid is frozen into the U so that the tube is blocked, the low pressure side of the U can be sealed off without the necessity of freezing the bulk of the liquid on the other side. This technique can be especially useful when the flask containing the bulk liquid is very large or if... [Pg.46]

For the X-ray scattering observations the samples were powdered and placed in Lindemann glass capillary tubes. The capillaries were held for 8 weeks at 293 K in closed containers in contact either with hexane vapour or with aqueous salt solutions of different relative humidity. At the end of the preparation, the capillary tubes were flame-sealed. X-ray measurements were made at the BM2 bending magnet beam line at the ESRF, Grenoble, France. With incident energy 18 keV, the wave vector range explored was 6x 10 [Pg.44]

Platinum electrodes used in Method 101.4 (Ref 10a, pi) are wires 0,0l6-inch diam, sealed-in-glass, with mercury connections. A magnetic stirrer with plastic- or glass-coated stirring bar is used (See Fig 6) for stirring the liquid in the cell. The cell is emptied by means of a glass suction tube and a suitable trap connected to a vacuum line... [Pg.521]

One can find 1-mm glass-lined stainless steel columns or fused silica capillary columns. Fused silica is available with 75-yU.m, 100-/xm, or 320-/xm internal diameter by 20-cm, 25-cm, or 30-cm length. Fused silica is a glass tubing with an outside polyimide coating to prevent breakage. [Pg.29]
